College Textbooks

Does anyone know of a local store who sells very gently used college textbooks? I started my classes today at CSM and, of course, they wait until they release the darn syllabus to tell you what books you need for the course. Makes no sense to me! :tantrum: But now, I'm ready to start my online classes and have to run out and get the flippin' books.

I've checked online with Barnes and Noble, Borders and Amazon - but I need them now!

Actually, if you had checked the college store's website prior to the start of classes you'd know what books you needed prior to the start of classes... that's how I have all my books but haven't started my classes yet (Monday and Wednesday only classes for me!)

Go on to Half.com and get expedited shipping, you'll save a ton of cash and get your books before any real big assignments come your way.

Having taken several classes already, I was able to look up my class schedule, click on the description and it would tell you what the materials were for the course. Neither of these courses specified materials and I wasn't going to purchase a book unnecessarily. I know that the bookstore at the college carries these books but they are outrageously expensive.

By mistake, I just found a website called "iChapters" and it lets you purchase specifics chapters of books for $4.49 each. Since I only need about 11 chapters, it will be cheaper for me to purchase them online and download them then to have the whole book.

Thanks for the help!

Textbooks, used textbooks and bestselling books. Buy new and used textbooks and sell textbooks at eCampus.com.

I use Amazon.com, once you know which books to purchase. They sell used ones at a decent price.

I sold a bunch of my old text books on half.com and made about $180 in less than a week.

I hesitate using Amazon only because everyone's idea of "used" or "good" is different. I take exceptionally good care of my books (no writing, highlighting or any marks whatsoever and the covers are in good condition). When a friend of mine purchased a book from Amazon that was supposed to be in "very good" condition, it was far from it.

I might give them a try on a book that isn't quite so important.

I've had very good luck with both mine and my son's textbooks from Half.com.

And if you don't mark them up, write in them etc.. etc.. what's the point of buying them? I've taken many classes where the text book was a waste of money other than for highlighting questions for the test.

When you register for class they give you the name of the textbooks you will need - just click on the blue icon on the registration page. I have a ton of books PM me with a list including ISBN # and I will check what I have.

The CSM bookstore Website tells you exactly what you need for every class and section.

And if you don't need those books anymore, seriously... just sell them on half.com... I sold 2 books in 30 minutes, and if you ship the books media mail, it doesn't cost you anything extra to ship them either.

Thanks for the info! I will check them out. Right now, I'm converting the chapters I downloaded from iChapters.com - an extremely painful, slow, tedious process but it is saving me over $200 because I don't have to purchase the entire book for 11 chapters.

I have some books left over from last semester and I'll put them on there and see what happens. I have heard that the book buyback at the College is a waste of time because they don't give you very much for them.

We're all mad here.
Check your local library's "for sale" section. Occasionally I will find newer textbooks there that someone must have used for one semester and then donated. It's a long shot, but you may have some luck.

I use e-bay most of the time to sell and buy...I think it may be your best bet.

Unfortunately, our library here in PF didn't carry any of the books I needed. Thanks for the suggestion! :howdy:

I just started getting this magazine from Consumer Reports called ShopSmart that tells about the best things to buy and places to get them (with no ads!). Anyway, they had a section on online book sellers and they liked:

textbooks.com for textbooks (duh!)
booksamillion.com for general books at great deals

and, a little more off subject, a site called gutenberg.org for free downloadable e-books.

Both the regular sites have free shipping on orders over $25, it says.
