Colonoscopy fears/alternatives

Oh I understand both. But I also understand that sometimes in life, my life is worth looking into and getting a little restful sleep

You have a point. I was thinking this morning, that if I went in first thing, this issue would be put to bed by now. Maybe I've been building it up so many years in my mind it has become bigger than it is. In reality,I stand a bigger risk of being hurt or killed driving there than getting it done.

Your right. The Doctors can be insensitive. Honestly I don't go to them unless I have no other alternatives. It does sound like you maybe getting close to that.

I don't see it as insensitive at all but rather non-argumentive.

It's no different than if you take your car in because it keeps overheating and you tell the mechanic you only want his services if he'll agree to diagnose and then fix the problem without performing a coolant level test or dismantling any part of the engine. He's not going to coddle you and promise an alternative solution will work. He'll hand you his prescription (estimate) and tell you come back to see him when you are ready to get your car fixed.

I think your analogy is flawed...I simply want a doctor to actually look at me for an obvious cause before going to the extreme. That's not being argumentative, that's simply saying even though you can make lots of money off of me,can you respect that I don't want get any potentially dangerous things done to me unless they are necessary. I have been to multiple doctors and never so much as took off a shoe. Pardon the vivid description but I have blood coming out of my a**. Would a little look-see be reasonable?!?!?! That would be like if I said my toe hurts,I might have a splinter or I might have a broken bone. It is smarter, cheaper, to check the easiest thing first.

Part 1: I need a colonoscopy.I have needed it for a long time-ten years,in fact, and have had it scheduled approx. 6 times, only to back out. I am not afraid of the procedure,I am afraid of the sedative..I have multiple drug allergies and I hate the idea of having something injected into me. I also have sleep apnea and am scared of not waking up. Reason tells me it is routine and no big deal, these procedures are done every day,but I still struggle with it,as I have major medical anxiety. I have seen three different doctors-Mills,Nagula,and Sewchand. The first two never agin,Sewchand was wonderful, but always they jump to colonoscopy as a first resort. I really would like to find someone who will at least examine me before going invasive-I hate to get graphic, but what is happening is very mild bleeding after most BM's. This was preceded by years of abdominal pain, and the bleeding has been recent-less than 6 months. It's mild, never more than a nickel sized area on the tp. Wouldn't an exam to rule out a fissure,or hemorroids make more sense?? But no one will do an exam - when I ask, they tell me why not just spare myself the discomfort and get a comprehensive view of what is happening. Can anyone suggest to me a doctor who will help me - I know I need the scope, but my fear is intense, and I need someone to work with me on this.

I have had one three years ago. Had polyp removed and told to come back in three years. Finished that in Oct. All clear. It all originally was from bleeding from a hemorrhoid. Polyp was was an accident. tell ur doc about your concerns. BTW no one did the exam manually. It is not bad. :buddies:

Sleep apnea

I also have heard there are basically two ways to go,Versed and Propofol. I did a search before and came up with an old thread by Geek, and she said at one point she was upset because all she could do was cry but not talk during her procedure. Is there one that does this-acts as a paralytic? My understanding is that Propofol is the way to go because it is so easy to reverse-simply stop administering it. My concern is the respiratory depressant qualities of both with my sleep apnea.

My husband had a colonoscopy with one of the Shahs....excellent experience. And he had very severe sleep apnea, including having to use a bipap machine and oxygen at night. They took it into account, and he had no problems. It was well worth the stress!!!

Is it dark blood or light blood....if its dark, its coming from the intestines or stomach....if its bright, then its later. At least thats true with cats.

Well, you asked for it.....it is a very small amount of bright red on the toilet paper after wiping. Never in the bowl.Never any more, never between bm's.

I believe my husband and I have even coined a new term for the feeling I sometimes get during...we call it "razor sh*ts".

You have made it a bigger issue then what is it.

To be honest, you aren't the first nor will you be the last to have fears about medical things. The doctors know this, and will take everything into account.

The problem now is you are going to get it done, then be pissed at yourself when it turns out to be a simple thing, or something WAY serious and you waited forever because you are acting like a child

How is a doctor supposed to give you a good diagnosis and treat you without attempting to look inside? What about a sono or something? If I had blood coming out of my backside, I'm not too sure I would be worried about the procedure. I'd be worried that my physical health were in jeopardy.

If you want someone to check out your ass so desperately, why don't you just have a friend take a peek for you?

Don't be so quick to think I haven't considered it. I will tell you that I was once so eager to know if there was anything there, that I actually hovered over my camcorder and recorded my a**,and then watched the tape, pausing it to "examine". I took said tape to Dr.Nagula who refused to look at it. :cds:
