Thats how them b*tch's R
I've heard a few people talk about this. I wonder if a business has cable do they pay the same fees as homeowners for their cable? I told my boss that it was changing and that I'm sure the price would go up but he just shrugged and said "we'll see." I'm sure it'll be a different story once the bill comes, lol. A co-worker switched to Direct TV. For one I believe where their building their house they won't get cable and two, she doesn't like being told she has to upgrade.

Is this something your county commissioners had to vote on?

All analog goes away next year anyway

:yeahthat:

In fact..America lags behind the rest of the modern world when it comes to modern television. Having a company run both analog and digital service costs the companies more money. So all of you pro-business folks should embrace this move.

Right?

Yes. The CCs are the ones who negotiate and approve the cable franchise agreement with the cable company.

It's got to cost more to maintain two different sets of equipment to do the same job.

It's still a revenue source, not a liability.

Plus, the cost of the analog equipment is less than digital equip. and digital has a lifecycle of about 24 months meaning upgrades/replacement is necessary almost continuously. From the limited reading I've done this seems to more than equal the cost of maintenance required by analog systems.

In the US, the move to digital isbeing driven by primarily by government regulation and not consumer demand.

I seems I was incorrect on the price increase. I have no boxes as my sets are cable ready. I will also need 6 boxes to get digital. That another $30.00 for a total of a $60.00 increase. What do other people in counties other than Calvert Pay for cable. I think we are getting ripped off.

I have Verizon DSL. Cost is 29.99/mo for a 3Mb connection.

They also have a 768Kb connection for 14.99/mo.

I'm paying $136 a month for DirecTV.
Includes:
-5 receivers (1 DVR, 2 standard receivers, 2 HD receivers)
-Premium package(5 or 5 HBO channels, couple Cinemax, couple Showtimes, etc)
-HD signal

I've been thinking about getting the Platinum package so I can just get everything 24/7. Does anyone have that package here?

Damn! I thought my $59.00 a month was bad.

I thought the "required switch" was just for broadcasted signals over the air so that the spectrum could be sold off.

Even though the costs may seem similar, it's still a moot point to actually have both running when the latter (digital) is more sufficent and offers better quality. More and more people are switching to digital cable for things like DVR and HDTV, things that aren't so easily available through an analog connection. Comcast has been asking areas all around their service area to switch to just DTV cabling, as it does make things a little bit easier on them. This means they won't have to worry about the analog service in that area whatsoever.

DirecTV is "okay" - depends on what you want out of a service, in total. People who are wanting a decent internet connection will probably stray away from satellite due to the outrageous price of satellite internet ($75+ per month just for 512kb download) when they can simply get cable internet for anywhere from $20 to $70 (for 30mbps downstream).

Verizon is good for internet if you're going through them for phone - however, they don't serve their DSL service throughout all areas of Southern Maryland due to the limited amount of DSLAMs they have in the area. I think the Verizon office in Leonardtown has several DSLAMs at their disposal - but that covers just about all of 'downtown' Leonardtown up to a certain point. Outside of that radius and between the route from there to Chaptico is where their service starts to die out for DSL-anxious customers. That means if they want a good connection they have to dish out the money to MetroCast.

Satellite internet isn't $75+ a month and it capable of going over 512k. Cable and DSL isn't always available in all areas.

Excuse me, I was wrong.

$49.95 - 512kb down/128kb up (max)
$69.95 - 1.0mb down/200kb up (max)
$79.95 - 1.5mb down/256kb up (max)

This is all the while that you can get 6.0mb down/384kb up for $44.90 from MetroCast. The download speed to price is just outrageous compared to DSL or Cable. Also, satellite internet normally isn't conditioned for excessive use anyways (this is why their download speeds aren't anything to brag about these days). Satellite internet can be just as sensitive as dial-up, due to the many things that can cause disconnections or latency from peer-to-peer communications.

--

My point was that satellite is still rather pointless for an internet connection. This is why most people will aim for Cable or DSL preferably in the end, unless they're not downloading much and aren't using it frequently either.

Internet connection is not an issue with me. I have dial-up for 10.00 a month and it works well for the little I use it. I do, however, want the local weather channel which, as I understand it, is not available over satellite. Neither are the Baltimore channels in my area. $59.00 a month for cable to $109.00 a month seems just a bit excessive to me.
