commissary closing

Obviously the writer of the article has never shopped at the commissary, that 30% discount is BS. While shopping at the commissary is cheaper for certain items, some items are the same price as out in town. Also, there is less selection when compared to most grocery stores out in town, however, it is still lower (but not 30% lower like the article states, I would say it’s more like 10 to 15% cheaper) and the service is ten times better than any store out in town.

Funny how those who have never served are so eager to take benefits away from those who have earned them and were promised them but are so oppose to taking away benefits away from those who have done nothing for their country other than ask for more benefits.

And as far as taxpayers funding military “benefits”, those active and retired military also pay taxes and have paid more than just taxes to earn those benefits, what has the welfare whores paid to earn their benefits?

The sad thing about people who are so eager supporting any initiative to take away benefits from our active duty and retirees, they failed to ackonledge the freedom they provided. You got up this morning in a country protected by young man and women who pay their taxes, spending a great deal away from their family to ensure you have a protective shield from appression and do as you please. Yeah the commissary might not provide a large discount from shopping out in town. Have you ever considered the respect they get from walking in to shop, what about during checking out. I don't shop much on base, but when I do. I quickly realize how fortunate we are for serving out country and get the benefits of someone treating active and retirees with the gesture of being thankful. That alone will keep me shopping there, try experiecing that out in town. If it was not the distance to shop on base, I would do so. but for quick I need things, I am without choice but go to Wally World and put up with disrespectful casher. They act like you are disturbing them from shopping there.

So don't be so close at the initiative, try to see what is not being presented. Soon our militay will be treated like they own the public to protect them. They made their choice to serve this great nation, another thing Maryland should be leading the charge in doing this. This State is smiling all the way to the bank, during active duty military pay is taxed. We retire, some migrate here in maryland where jobs are, MD taxes their retirement and their current pay. So in MD eyes, these retirees are gold to the state. Tax their retirement and move here and get well paid as contractors or Gov. Wow, what a concept and yet we want to take away benefits... Mannn talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Sleep well my friend.

I think you're comparing apples and oranges.. We provide the building and the lights and plumbing, and they set up shop and service an entire community.
..

Are you sure? That's the same deal contractors get under A76.

That is more of function of our Walmart than Walmart in general.

It's a nationwide problem. It's been in the news.

Anyway, I would hope that if it were going in the direction of privatisation hat a company like Costco would be the one providing the services.

Zactly. We've lost quite a few benefits over the years and we'll lose a lot more. What happened to making sure your veterans are taken care of??? What happened to supporting them? All talk and BS?

What I don't understand is they are talking about closing them.. F that.. DON'T close them.. Put them up for bid!

I'm sure some HUGE grocery chain would LOVE to manage and sell their products in ALL of our worldwide stores.

Wal-Mart comes in (for example), charges a 5% tax that they get to pocket (that they aren't allowed to do in their own stores) to pay for "overhead", the prices will be significantly cheaper, as they are now in Wal-Mart and Shoppers and Food Lion.. And we'd get a better selection.

Government gets out of the grocery store business, AND makes money!

Don't even have to do an over-reaching world wide contract for ALL the stores, you can even do a local contract (where small and LARGE companies can compete) for one or two comissaries.. and do one huge contract for all the overseas stores.

Makes sense to me, so everyone else shoot holes in my theory and tell me where my ideas are flawed..

I think you're comparing apples and oranges.. you're talking about tasks we would pay somebody to do while I'm talking about chains PAYING to use the base facilities to sell their products and services. We provide the building and the lights and plumbing, and they set up shop and service an entire community.

The commissary, especially in t be US, is duplicating efforts already done by dozens of local companies 100% paid by the government. Imagine, even if it wasn't 100% takeover, if we piggybacked off of Wal-Marts massive logistics train instead of running and managing our own. Kind of like the relationship the USPS has with Fed-Ex and UPS...

I don't know/have the printed source, but my wife (does all the shopping) told me that she recently read where they looked at this idea and none of the WalMart like outfits were interested in doing it. Said they could not make any money doing so.

That is probably correct, they make tiny amounts of money off each item and only make much money because of the vast quantity. I'd wager that one of the busier super center does more business than all Navy commissarys would put together.

Are you all seriously outraged just because the commissary is going to be closed two days a week?

I'm not, because I don't step foot in that place (or any other grocery store) unless it's absolutely necessary for marriage maintenance.
