On my way home today driving down route 4 I see a Trooper running radar, nothing out of the ordinary. He catches somebody in a blue car speeding, he proceeds to step out into the road and flag them over to the side. But what happens next just completely sent me over the edge. The car that he was going to pull over was an undercover cop car, all this cop does is flash his red and blues and the trooper steps back behind his car to begin running radar again.

HOW IN THE HELL IS THIS LEGAL? Why are they allowed to get away with that. Had it been me he was signalling to the side of the road, I surely would have gotten a ticket.

This is complete abuse of authority. After seeing that I have lost all respect I had for our justice system.
That is pretty severe to loose all of your respect for our JUSTICE SYSTEM over one incident. You must not have had a lot of respect in the first place.

Remember right after 9/11 when we were all fying flags on our cars and respecting the people that would give their lives to save us or our family? I really miss that. Everytime I see a Police officer I just can't get it out of my head that they would be willing to come and help me if I was in danger, or more importantly my family. They leave their kids to come help me. I am so thankful. They don't get paid enough either.

People were just a bit nicer for a while then, weren't they? Then we went back to the same old. :ohwell:

not going to spend my time reading all of the responses so,, if I repeat someone elses thoughts, I am sorry.

ok. how is this legal.. its not.

abuse of authority? most likely.

lost all respect?? think again.

you have a person that has for whatever reason decided to try to do what he or she can to protect the public, thats me and you. This person, for a very small paycheck (considering) puts their life out there every day so that we can go about our business without worrying about being robbed, shot, carjacked etc...
If they get away with a speeding ticket now and again, I could care less.

I have nothing to give them outside of my taxes, but for some reason they are willing to take a chance on being disabled or killed just so I can go on my happyass merry way in life.

God bless them all.

think about what they do for you, or what they are willing to do for you before you complain about something as small as a speeding ticket.

Hey dummy, if you are going to snivel about people not signing their karma, you should sign yours. Those of us with KarmaTracker XP can tell who leaves karma, and you didn't sign it. You're a bit of a hypocrit, aren't you?

Where do you download KT XP?

I don't believe you are correct. Their are set procedures for responding "without lights and siren" up to so many miles above the speed limit. There is no way of knowing if a Officer is responding to a call.
I suspect you are correct. In many states (including Maryland I think but I can't quote the paragraph right now) unmarked cars are permitted to speed without lights and siren if they're responding to a crime scene that requires a stealthy approach. They've got special procedures for informing other cops as to what they're up to.

Undoubtedly, the cop working the radar had gotten word by radio that the speeding unmarked car would be coming through, and the cop in the unmarked car merely had to confirm that it's him.

Personally, I'm more than happy to cut the cops some slack.

Actually, there is no provision in Maryland law for any emergency vehicle to ever exceed the limit without using a siren. They must also use lights, except police vehicles not equipped with lights, but they still must use a siren.

Obviously, enforcement of these laws is not practical, but that is the way the law reads.

Well, if Maryland law doesn't have that provision I guess that's probably why I wasn't able to find it. Some states do (Nebraska and Kansas that I know of) and I guess I just erroneously assumed it was a commonplace provision.

I heard a call on a scanner the other day where a cop was joining in the chase of a motorcycle heading toward the solomons bridge. They were trying to block him from ahead. The police officer hit another police officers radar trap, but they were able to communicate this fact over the radio without him getting pulled over.

Just so you know, there are times we have to respond to things not using our lights or sirens. The law does exempt emergency vehicles from the traffic article. Now some might argue if the vehicle is an emergency vehicle if it is not using lights and siren, but most agencies policies have provisions for the officer to travel to emergency calls not using their emergency equipment.

As a matter of law, the officer is required to use due dilligence in the operation of the vehicle. So what it would really come down to is liability of there were an accident.

I can tell you it is much safer at times to not use my emergency equipment when going to calls, because of the unpredictable reaction of drivers who see police or ambulances approaching with their lights on.

Skimming through all the complaining about cops and getting back to the original topic. Jumping out in the travel portion of the roadway to stop a speeding vehicle has always been a practice I am not a fan of. You will also find that many supervisors that catch their officers doing this will dish out one fine ass chewing.

It is a dangerous method of running radar. When I have seen them jump out in traffic, I swear my heart is about to fall out my butt.

But, they will not stop doing it until an officer gets ran over and the public goes ballistic and says see......

A Howard County Officer doing radar Saturday flagged down a car and was struck, has died today of his injuries.
