Considering moving to Shady Side

My wife and I are thinking of moving to Shady Side and starting a family. How's the area? Still low crime? Have the demographics changed? Lots of druggies / pillheads, or is it still family friendly? Has flooding gotten any worse in recent years?

I guess if you are moving from NE DC or the 1300 block of Clifton St [ notorious crime are in the 90's ] Shady Side might be an improvement ....

you could probably do a web search for Shady Side Crime Statistics ... but even Fort Washington / National Harbor is getting bad these days

A web search shows almost no crime, but I somehow doubt that. My wife and I are looking for someplace sleepy and safe. We own firearms but don't want to live someplace where we feel like they are necessary for our safety.

Just to be clear, we're considering Shady Side near Deale / Churchton. I'm not sure which Shady Side you're referring to.

I have a friend who lives in that area and it's pretty nice - you should have no problems. Like anywhere else there are going to be some jerks, but my understanding is that it's low compared to other areas in MD.

?

Shady Side is in south AA county, just north of Deale.

Thank you. We thought the area looked pretty nice when driving around it, but some friends who admittedly don't live there told us that there is a lot of drug activity. Glad to hear that it's a nice place.

I'm sure there is some drug activity because you can't avoid it these days, but it's pretty rural back there. A good resource is to look at the Great Schools website for Shady Side Elementary and check the stats and also check the Wiki page.

Stay in DC or at least Montgomery County.

There are good and bad parts of any town, but Shadyside is not a place most people who live in south county aspire to live. Mostly because of the quality of the land, not the people (although there is a druggie area, for sure). There are a lot of sewer and septic problems, local flooding, and it is very buggy. If you have enough money you can buy and maintain a nice home. There are also a lot of restrictions in the area as to what you can and cannot do to your home as far as additions and out buildings that you may want to look into before you buy. Basically, it's what priorities work best for you, to know what's right. Just do your own due diligence about any area. There will always be things to love and hate.

My info is from close friends who either grew up or still live there.

This is very helpful, thank you. Does your friend know where the druggie area is, and do the activities there tend to stay confined to that area?

I have no desire to live in either.
Be aware that Shadyside, in fact all of southern Anne Arundel, is RURAL. You can't just "pop out' and get that loaf of bread you forgot. The area is made up of long time, meaning multi-generational going back to the American Revolution and before, residents and others who are relative newcomers.
The old guys don't go to the local gourmet coffee shoppe (there isn't one) in the morning for coffee but the gas station.
The roads are narrow and you will often get behind farm equipment. You'll hear gunshots in the Fall from the marshes, duck hunters. You'll also hear the engine noise from the workboats when the watermen are pulling their pots.

All of this sounds like a plus to me. As far as groceries are concerned, I stopped by Shady Side Market and Christopher's Fine Foods, and both looked like excellent options.

I recognize that we'd be newcomers. Hopefully there is a good sense of community? I imagine we share the same politics as most longtime residents.

I want to say it's at the part where you come into "town" there are some smaller more run-down houses that shelter most of the druggies. From what I remember they tend to stay around there or maybe walk the side of the road out of town some. It's been awhile since it's come up in conversation. Go for drives at different times of the day and week and see what you notice.

As far as needing a quick gallon of milk or something, as you said, there are a few places not too far that will serve your needs. Deale has built up a little and has some decent places for carry-out and such, plus a couple if decent restaurants for seafood.

Good to know. And yes, we drove around Deale as well. It's a cute little town, and we saw a number of restaurants.

We're looking at buying in Avalon Shores, Idlewilde, or maybe Cedarhurst. Cedar Point is beautiful but likely exceeds our budget.
