When all it took was a 6-pack split between 2 hardheads, we splurged every now and again. I usually grabbed a bumper of Bud. When you were buying a quantity, that's when our tastes changed significantly. 😆

When I was out in Indiana at college back in the 70s, and a poor student, several of us would get together and buy one 6-pack of Michelob and a case of whatever was on sale for 9.99. Yep..could get a case of Iron City, Fox Deluxe or the plain white can "generic beer" for $9.99 a case..sometimes even less!. I remember on time a store we frequented had a close-out sale on some swill whose named I've thankfully forgotten for $4.89 a case. We'd each start off with a Mich and then the switch-over to the swill was much easier to take.

And who remembers Strohs?

When we lived in Illinois, Heileman Old Style was still brewed.
Here's 17 year old Calamity Jane guarding my 30 pack.

Late 60s we used to get a case of Black Label(in non-returnable bottles) for $2.99, Tasted quite a bit better than BL in cans.

Drank Strohs for 4 or 5 years in the 70s.

My Grandfather always had Wurtzburger in the far back of the fridge and Black Label right up front where it was visible. I think it was only for company that he didn't want drinking his good beer. :lmao:

Rheinlander beer was around $5.00 back then. It's the only beer I've ever thrown away.

I suffered through a couple cases of Billy Beer. Don't think I resorted to throwing any away though.....

The only beer I ever recall being unable to swallow was some nasty swill I encountered in El Salvador back in the '70s. The taste was nasty and bore no resemblance to any beer I'd ever had.

I thought that stuff was just a souvenir and didn't' think anyone actually drank it.
During the same time, we were traveling out in the middle of the nowhere El Salvador and stopped in a little town that looked like it was straight out of a spaghetti western. Walked in to an open adobe building and sat down at a rickety wooden table and the host brought us a clear glass bottle full of clear liquid..no label and a hand-cut cork stuffed in the top. And some small drinking glasses of dubious cleanliness, limes and a cup of coarse salt. Best damned tequila (except they called it something else) that ever went past my lips.
