A CONVOY of self-driving cars took to a public motorway in Spain in normal traffic, a world first, according to Swedish car maker Volvo.

A professional driver took the lead in a truck, and was followed by four self-driven Volvo vehicles: a second truck and three cars, Volvo said.

Vehicles in the road train were equipped with safety systems including cameras, radar and laser sensors, enabling them to monitor the lead vehicle and other vehicles on the road.

"By adding in wireless communication, the vehicles in the platoon mimic the lead vehicle using Ricardo autonomous control - accelerating, braking and turning in exactly the same way as the leader," Volvo said.

And quite honestly, even todays "idiot" AIs can drive safer, normal, and emegency, than say %70 of the drivers on the road.

What happens if the lead car crashes?

I would hope detected crash type readings would trigger a "Park Safe Feature", where the cars slow and pull over.

I find my self constantly surprised by how many folks have no idea how much innate voice control capability that Android has. Was doing some stuff on the hangar deck recently, an engineer, pretty geeky sort of guy, was telling me where a great rib place was. He grabbed a pen, I said hold on, and hit the microphone button on my screen. "Navigate to XX Rib Place", and held it up so he could see it display what I had said, then kick on the Google Nav and plot a course. Guys had a smartphone since they came out, and had no idea it could do that. Then, just to freak him out, I asked it "How tall is Mt Ranier?", and it displayed the answer, no typing required.
