COps being targeted for crime..

3 off duty officers in the last couple of months have been robbed at gunpoint. One Dies, one gets woulded in a gun battle, and one gets away unharmed only after the criminal holds a gun to her childs head..

Talking to a local police chief last night.. (MD) he states the the one that survived the gun battle was wearing a bullet proof vest..and suggests all officers do the same.. "Take the extra steps to protect themselves"

WAIT!! It's against the law for a citizen or anyone in MD to be in possession of body armor no matter the reason, let alone wear it. Why can they legally wear it off duty? We aren't afforded the chance to "Take extra steps to protect.." ourselves..

Anyone else see the problem with this?? If you're an off duty cop, it's ok if you protect yourself from criminals, but an ordinary citizen doesn't get afforded the same right?

I don't think the ordinary citizen has the same risk of being shot as an off duty police officer does. Imagine how many people out there hate police officers. I think under certain circumstances, such as, an individual whos life is being threatened or something of that nature, should be able to wear body armor.

No i see no problem with that.

Cops carry police ID's and weapons off-duty. Most are required to while off-duty. Don't you think think they are at a disadvantage if a criminal discovers they are a cop and have no protection? They are still there to protect you. Do you want criminals wearing bullet proof vests? Think about it....

There shouldn't be any law against wearing body armor. It a protective device that can not do harm. Anybody should be alowed to wear it.

Making bullet proof illegal only prevents law abiding citizens from wearing them.

What makes you think that the people who are in possession of illegal hand guns would not buy illegal vests

That is a good point. If the criminals want something enough they will do what it takes to get it.

Citizens haven't been allowed to protect themselves from criminals in MD for a long time.

I didn't know they were illegal.

Too bad, I wanted to get some DragonSkin. I saw it on Futureweapons...they laid a dummy wearing DragonSkin on top of a grenade. Nothing penetrated through the vest! :yikes:

What they said on the News last night is, they don't think the police were bing targeted, they feel they are crimes of opportunity, they see someone by themselves, in a bad location and rob them, they just turned out to be cops.. If they were just normal citizens they have NO Way to protect themselves..

Oh wait, after they are shot, and on the ground bleeding to death THEN they can call the cops with their vests to come protect them..

I've heard about it, but I hadn't seen the show. I don't know how I missed it, probably slept through it.

Making bullet proof vests legal, places law enforcement officers at a disadvantage in protecting the public.

Do you want to license bullet proof vests? Materials in vests have a shelf life. Who's gonna regulate them?

MD has very strict gun control laws. But at least there not as bad as DC were you are not even allowed to own a handgun.

The police do not protect the public

I'm still waiting for someone to file a false advertising lawsuit against the police because of their "protect and serve" slogan.

How would allowing the average person to wear a vest put the police at a disadvantage?

case in point: The Bank of America Robbery in California a few years back that resulted in the big shootout with the LAPD. Those criminals had better body armour and weapons than the cops. So once again, the laws only serve the purpose to hinder those who are law abiding anyway from protecting themselves to a fuller extent. As other people have pointed out, criminals DO NOT care about laws; they don't feel that laws apply to them, thus their chosen profession.

But, I must admit, I didn't know Average Joe Citizen couldn't buy a bullet proof vest.

Who regulates, and licenses them in VA, or GA or any other state where they are legal??

Why should an off duty police officer be able to wear one, and not the person responsible for carrying the night deposit to the bank at night? Or me if I decide to gas up at the Shell station on 235 at night?

If it were legal to own and wear, put the responsibility on the person owning it. If it is past the shelf life and one doesn't do anything about it, it's their own fault. Their a "shelf life" on milk in your fridge right? Do you wait for a letter in the mail or a phone call telling you it's has gone bad?

Why are radar detectors illegal in Virginia?...

Pick your poison......live where you agree with the laws....we can find laws that don't make sense to us wherever we live.

If that was the case nobody would live in MD...

AND a radar detector isn't a form of protection.. If you wanted to go into the inner harbor after 11 PM would you chose to take a radar detector with you for extra protection??

If you get caught with a radar detector in VA do you go to jail for a "Detector Crime"??

I think this is where the law came from.. polticians running around screaming, THE SKY IS FALING, THE SKY IS FALLING.. We MUST make this illegal so it doesn't happen again.. Like you're going to rob a bank and you'd be worried about breaking a "Possession of Body Armor" law.. of course they never mentioned how the guns used in that roobery were ALREADY illegal in the state of California..
