Corn vs Wood Stove

I would watch out for corn as corn prices will certainly rise because of E85 coming on line as an alternative to gasoline for cars.

True. Might not be a big deal though, pellet prices jumped way up last year from the year before as well. I'm looking to get this years load now, not sure what to expect price-wise.

Don't waste your money on a corn stove......I drove all the way to PA to get mine, paid a bunch of money and never burn corn in it only wood pellets. The corn I bought from the Amish just didn't put out much heat and stunk like burned popcorn. I tried different blends of pellets and corn. Never could get the stove to perform as advertised. So stay with a regular pellet stove. All pellet stoves require venting exhaust gases. Keep in mind also they require 110 VAC power to work at all.

Corn burns hotter than pellets if I correctly remembe the article I read in the Washington ComPost a couple years ago. Do a search for Takoma Park's website. They probably have info there since they formed a corn co-op for people who use it to heat their houses. They buy organic corn from a farmer in Mt. Airy and store it in a co-op owned silo in town.

That's interesting hunter. I would like to read that article. It sure goes against what I have experiened. I can vary feed rate of fuel and draft to the fire box but never got the corn to burn correctly. Stunk bad too.

My Mom and Dad have a corn stove. They opted for that over a pellet stove because in a corn stove, you can burn wood pellets too, but you cannot burn corn in a wood pellet stove or so they were told by the dealer. they get their corn from a farmer and bag it themselves, but I think any field corn either from Walmart, or feed store is fine. If you will run it around the clock, be prepared for alot of corn, though. it only feeds in a few kernals at a time, but all the time, so it will go through it faster than you think. "Klink" (ash) is minimal, and easily removed from the fire box. He's got an insert and flu's it out the chimney. Mom and Dad love theirs! Oh, and btw.. sometimes it does pop the corn.. only a few times, though.. but it's funny to see that. I'd like a pellet/corn stove too, if only to not have to do all that firewood all the time.

Higher ash content from corn burning stoves. You don't need a MASONRY chimney for the stove, you can use plain old stove piping or a "sideshot" chimney and go straight through an exterior wall. You can get bagged dry corn from the Amish.

:buttkick: SSSSHHHHHHHH

Dont tell them that until after hunting season, their prices are high enough as it is

But, Stauffer's Feed Mill is like $5 and some change (closer to 6) for a 50lb bag of corn this year

I got 2 tons for $230 a ton back in July at American Hardware, I know they go up a bit each month.
I like their brand compared to some of the others seems like less ash to cleanup. Got my stove at Tri-County but don't like there pellet brand.
This will be my third winter coming up that I have had my pellet stove and I agree with Vince, one of the best investment I have made, hardly burn any oil during the winter, have split foyer and the stove sits in the family room facing the steps upstairs and it keeps the whole house warm.
Only wish the prices on pellets would stop going up.

Yeah, they've gone up since July and they told me expect another increase around Dec/Jan.

Im not sure but think they go up about $10 a month this time of the year.

I'd like to get about another ton in the next couple of weeks, then I think I'd have enough stockpiled to get through the winter. Were due for a really cold winter sometime soon the last few have'nt been so bad, I want to be prepared.

I just called American, they have no pellets in stock right now. I was told $239 a ton when they get some.

Went to WalMart. They had pellets for $247/ton. Picked them up there and saved myself a trip to Mechanicsville or Waldorf.

That's cheap. Paid $288 at Ace in Lusby, but they have plenty and just delivered a ton to me today.

They call me ... Sarcasmo
A 70/30 mix of corn and pellets is supposed to produce the optimum BTU output on my stove with only a slight increase in ash production. Sunflower seeds produce the highest amount of BTU's but they also produce 14% ash vs. 1/2% for pellets. FWIW

Getting them delivered is a plus. I had to make 2 trips 'cause I just couldn't put a full ton in the pickemup. Fortunately, they're just across the street from me.

Can't burn corn in mine.... :frown:
