Any mammal can be infected with rabies. In Maryland, foxes and skunks usually each comprise 5% of the confirmed rabies cases. Raccoons make up 85% of the confirmed rabies cases in Maryland. Once an animal is infected, the disease is fatal. Animals usually die within ten days once the signs of rabies are evident. It is important to avoid physical contact with wild animals and immediately report any animal bites to your local health department.

:yeahthat: Rabies kill over 55,000 people a year!

Stay away from it and keep your pets away from it....hubby and I were chased by a rabid raccoon last Fall. My husband shot it...they would have taken our dog from us but she was updated on her shots ( never let your pet get behind on their shots ) they would have had to keep her locked up for weeks and we would have to pay for it...and no human contact with her untill she was past the time of coming down with rabies.
Hubby had to get the shots because he touched the raccoon ( not on purpose ).

And.....if it is rabid...and before the "dumb" stage of the disease, a rabid animal will attack unprovoked.

Yes, I'm a rabies :nerd:
