CPU Fried?

Oh im not talking about outdated P4's though. All the new 775's are in a locked cage now.

As for the thermal paste, yes if its a single core just a drop about the size of a grain of rice is all you need.

There was more than just a drop on the cpu when I pried it off the bottom of the heat sink. Did they use something else?

Well you put a drop on but when you put the heatsink on it presses it flat over the whole surface. What was on there was probally a thermal pad. It doesnt work nearly as well. Once you pull a chip wipe it clean with a lint free cloth and a little rubbing alch and you should be ready to toss some new paste on there

ok, got the new cpu (included was a heatsink with the thermal stuff preapplied on the bottom), so I put it in the right way, locked it in and installed the heat sink. Turned on the PC, so still nothing on the screen (no BIOS), but now I actually get beeps. The beeps don't stop and are a second or two apart. I'm not sure what the hell it's complaining about now, could I have killed the mobo as well?

video card, or keyboard/mouse not plugged in

BIOS Beep Codes

from the site, I think this might be the problem.
Repeating (Endless loop) Memory error Bad memory or bad connection

is it the ram? I tried reseating everything. video card, and I just use a Logitech USB wireless keyboard/mouse

Ram could have been fried...

Are you sure it's an endless loop of beeps, did you actually count the beeps, or just assume it was endless after a bunch in a row...

yeah I left it on for at least a minute to see if the beeps would stop, it just keeps beepin' like an effin alarm clock. I just don't want to keep buying stuff to see if it'll fix the problem. What if I buy RAM (don't have extras laying around), still doesn't work? New video card, new HD, etc. Buy new mobo might solve the problem, but I'm already thinking about a new PC.

That, actually, was going to be my next comment. You can continue to throw money at it, just for the sheer sake of resolving it, but by the time you buy a new board, new memory, new CPU, etc..... you can get a halfway decent new PC with all new hardware and a warranty (as long as you don't open the case and remove the cpu... hint hint))

I have....maybe had.....an AMD Athlon X2 4400+ CPU (in a HP Pavilion)
I was cleaning the dust out of my desktop because for some reason my computer kept freezing up, I know I don't have any viruses or spyware, so I assume my cpu was getting too hot. Anyway, I did find a lot of dust inside so I started cleaning it out. I took out the fan and heat sink that was on top of the cpu because there was a lot of dust built up inside. But for some reason when I took the fan and heat sink out, the cpu was still attached on the bottom. I've touched almost everything inside a pc before, but never messed around with the cpu. So I put the cpu back in and the heat sink and fan on top, and turned the pc on....nothing came up, no BIOS, just a black screen.
So took the stuff out again, and noticed I had bent a few pins on the cpu......I didn't know about the lever you need to put up before seating the cpu in. I'm not sure, but I might have put the cpu in the wrong way.
 How did the cpu come out if the stupid lever was supposed to lock the cpu in place?!!!
So I carefully straightened the pins back into place with a tiny flat edge screw driver, put the cpu in the right way......and tried to turn on the pc, still nothing. I've tried numerous times, made sure pins are all straight, yet still nothing. Could I have killed it? :bawl:

well, I spent about 100 for the new cpu (just got the exact same one)....with a free AMD T-Shirt! Wow
RAM isn't that expensive right? Can you return RAM if opened already? So I might give it one last chance and just return everything if it doesn't work for me.....I still have a few days till I can return the CPU, so I might try and buy the cheapest RAM and see if that'll work. If it doesn't work, then at least I have spare parts and extra RAM (if they're still good) for the new PC that I'll buy.....and open it because I hate warranties and I will be extra careful this time......because I am stubborn. I will never take a heatsink and/or cpu out again. I've never had problems messing around with everything else.

There ya go Basher.. good opp to learn about what makes a computer REALLY tick.... and maybe get something you can use!

Ive volenteered there before, Good info but the free systems are mild at best. If all you want is surf the net and little things here and there then its a great experience. I think they moved near Aarons rental though. I went there when they were near PJ's auto shop.

Putting any chip backward into a socket and applying power will almost certainty fry the silicon by applying "reverse bias" to pins which then "zeners" the transistors and they then pass a high current, limited only by the power supply's current limiting.
This damage can have a cascade failure effect; in that putting the chip in wrong damages something else on the PCB. Then the damaged PCB fries the next chip which is inserted properly.
Motherboards which have had a chip in backwards with power applied can never be trusted again IMHO, but if you want to test the motherboard for a non critical application, use a known good, but older generation, chip and be prepared for that chip to fry as well. My gut says don't put a new CPU chip in a socket that has powered a mis inserted chip.
I am not a PC fixer type [Kim does all the IT]. I design the inner guts of electronic products on the chip level, so maybe I am off base in the PC MB universe and no damage to the MB occurred.

Yea I have a quad intel (Q6600) mine liquid cooled and overclocked to 3.3gig so far. What a beast!

just curious.....how do you overclock? isn't a quad core fast enough?
I'll stick with Vista for a bit to learn more, if it causes too many problems I'm going back to XP.
I read up on Vista's ReadyBoost capability by increasing your Memory using USB thumb drives. Has anyone tried it yet? I already have 3Gigs of RAM, would sticking in a 2GB USB Thumb drive make a difference?
