Cruise Ship Terminal in Solomons?

It would be great for me, would not have to drive my wife up to Baltimore to go on a cruise. But i honestly don't know how much business it would draw. Every time i have been at the Baltimore port i see cars from Jersey, Delaware, PA, and actually some with NY tags. None of them would want the added commute to go to Solomons. Would draw some from Md and Va. though, but i don't think that would sustain it. JMHO

Good point. Baltimore is smack dab on 95..with 83 and 70 connected. Nothing remotely close to that kind of "nodal " access to Solomons.

The beam on these ships would probably prevent fitting between the bridge pylons, thus most of this discussion is moot.

methinks the scope of this is a wee bit....different.

Tis true, for most people at least. However if I remember the thread correctly, it was a life changing experience for a Cracker Barrel to be built, and not be off a highway.

My post was meant to be sarcastic .

Not enough infrastructure to support 800 - 1,000 additional cars on the road twice a week.

Lots of small towns are voting down cruise ship docks. Mayport, FL comes to mind.

Hmm there are smaller cruise ships, I could see something like that happening here. People get all excited for big cruise ships and in comes ships that carry a few hundred people. Kind of like when we got a Best Buy.

um..you were kidding? That traffic would literally be "lost in the data noise".

The window for this additional traffic would be quite small. The bridge is bad enough at 4pm without adding to the traffic. Then there would likely be a fee booth that would further jam up the line going in to park. Unless they use satellite parking and shuttle everyone in.

IMHO, no area in Solomons for cruise ship satellite parking. No place to park on July 4th, Tiki Bar opening etc etc. And again, even if the lease went through with the Navy for the 50 acres, am not sure they could generate enough traffic to make it profitable. JMHO

Cruise ports like Baltimore have mass transit and an airport to move people, not just cars. Solomons has none of that. Not sure how they see the number of people using this system by just driving in.

Glasscock, dude who owns all that farm land south of the bridge has made a deal with Dominion to lease out his property so Dominion can install an 18 month "temporary" pier for the unloading of material from barges needed to build the expansion. Since the expansion is not a done deal (but many think it is) it will be interesting to see what happens with the proposed cruise terminal which Donnelly has been trying to get put in for some time now.

I failed to see any connection between those two "activities", geographically or otherwise (the temporary use of some of the farmland being south of the bridge on private property and the proposed cruise terminal north of the bridge on govt property)....were you suggesting there is one?

Another huge difference would be the local "footpriint"; once the Dominion upgrades/construction is completed that operation simply returns to the same level of low visibility it had previously, the only difference being that their product will be flowing in the opposite direction. A cruise terminal right in middle of the Solomons area, on the other hand...

You really think our roads could handle 800-1000 vehicles all trying to get out of the same parking lot within a short span of time, from what would likely be a single lane road next to the bridge? Somehow I see that as being highly congested.

Not saying that. What I was pointing out is simply that 800-1000 vehicles is not a lot more compared to the current traffic density on rt 4...for which I posted the link. Unless the cruise terminal parking lot traffic happened to coincide with base rush hour traffic, the impact wouldn't be that great. If it did coincide..the mess we already have would be a little messier.

They wouldn't coincide...cruise ships usually unload in the morning (rush hour would cross the bridge, most of the cruise traffic probably would head in the other direction) and load early to mid-afternoon. It would just make for more constant traffic around the bridge than there already is. :cds:

Well I can't see the terminal idea ever getting built, so....
