My mother-in-law lost a dog, it fell into the goldfish pond and drowned. Broke her heart.
She took some boards, made a square about the size of the pond, and stapled screening mesh on it. Not too heavy to use. She just slides it atop each night. Lately, the screening has been left on during the day, too.
