Declawing

Also Chasey....you can get catnip and rub it into what you approve the cat to claw on such as a scratching post. This is also "supposed" to help the cat to learn what can be scratched.
Timon has his own condo w/built in scratch-pad and catnip. He hardly ever glances at the thing.

Well what about spaying and nuetering? Way more invasive and not really medically beneficial to a cat (a dog yes). It is a partial amputation yes but if done with a laser it is virtually painless.

:smack: You are just being obstinate.

I gave my opinion.

No I'm not. I had my cat spayed even though she is an indoor cat. There is always the change that she could get out and get pregnant and that is something I don't want to deal with. I also got her declawed at the same time even though she had never scratched a thing. There was the possiblility that she "could" though.

I totally respect your opinion. :huggy: I was just giving mine.

Animals can get uteran/ovarian cancer just like humans, as well. You did the right thing, even though I'm doubting the declawing. Day is all for it without any convincing.

What's the cost for this? A few hundred bucks? What are some common complications?

It was almost 400 for all four paw when we had Blu done. If you are only doing front, I wanna say it is around $180. The only thing you have to watch out for is infection and that will be easy to spot. Also the cat will need to be confied to a room with little to jump on. This is to prevent the incission site from splitting open. You will also need to use a special litter until the paws heal. This was provided to us by the vet when we had our cat declawed. We used St Mary's Animal Hospital.

Pyometria (sp? an infection of the uterus) is much more common in cats. Uteran/ovarian cancer is almost unheard of in animals. Female dogs who are not spayed are more prone to breast cancer. That is also very rare in cats. There is no true benefit to fixing a cat besides controlling the population.

Thanks! I'm going to talk it over with Day and make a decision. That is, after other alternatives are used.

Look at Foster and Smith online. They have cool little nail coverings if you decide not to go with the declaw. Kind of like gloves for the nails. :lmao:

Chasey if that cat even has a remote chance of going outside, I would keep it's claws.

When I was in H.S. we had a cat that jumped over a nieghbors fence and was mauled by dogs because she couldnt get back over. She was an inside cat, but we had just recently started letting her out a little each day with some of our other cats that had claws. They normally would stay in the fenced in backyard. But that day she didnt.

Hey Chasey, are you and day thinking about kids?

What about the one day that your baby is lying in his/her crib, and the cat jumps in with claws extended?

What about the day you buy that nice leather couch?
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.

I love my cat and didn't want him to be hurt, but it took all of one day for him to get over it and a week or so before the bandages came off.

That is the one reason we had our cat declawed was my daughter. He thought her arms are play toys at night in bed so the claws HAD to go. And he does just find without.

Timon IS my kid. He's an indoor cat, but sometimes I take him for walks (he has a collar and harness). I'm not so much worried about him scratching people (he meows when he wants down) it's the furniture. Even with his claws trimmed (once a week) he still manages to scratch away at his favorite spot. This is strictly at our convenience, and I realize it may be wrong, but I can't have him ruining thousands of dollars worth of furniture.

Thanks for the input, City. It actually makes the decision to go with it a little easier, even though I know there is pain involved. I'll probably take the day off to nuggle with him after the surgery.

Also consider that when you're cutting off the first joint of the toe, you are affecting the manner in which your cat walks and carries his weight. Declawing forces the cat to apply extra stress to his tendons in order to move---which, although not that big of a deal in the short term---can lead to more severe arthritis and back pain as the cat ages.

Another con I've read about declawing was litterbox problems. I'll trade a urine soaked chair for one with stuffing coming out of it any day..Good ole' Vincent...RIP 1996. 10 year old kitty declawed when he was over a year old and my Mom says you can still smell the urine by the doorstep as his thank you.
