Defective DVD

I'm hoping somebody here has dealt with a similar situation, and can give some advice.

We bought some DVDs through Amazon. The first disc is double-sided, and one side is defective. But of course, Amazon policy is not to take back any DVD that has been opened (of course).

But I'm not willing to shell out money for a defective DVD. Any suggestions? I think we just need to call Amazon and fight our way through whatever automated phone system they have till I get a real person.

Read the fine print. There should be a clause about "defective" materials, and the replacement. After that, a call is probably in order.

Go to store. Buy replacement DVD. Go home, switch bad DVD for new DVD. Exchange now opened DVD for new DVD, go to another store and return it as a late Christmas gift or re-gift it? Or, take bad DVD to Best Buy and tell them it was a Christmas gift and it's bad and exchange it for a new one?

Go to blockbuster rent the movie put the bad one in the case return it tell them it was defective and let it go.

Amazon's customer service has a direct line to a human! Go to your account and click help, then contact us. There you will find options on how to contact them. You choose phone and there they ask for your phone number, you click submit and your phone rings and it connects you directly to a person. Just did this myself this morning. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM EBAGS.COM!!!! Just a little FYI!

actually, it was from barnes and noble.

weird thing is, the disc will play in the dvd-rom of our computer but not in our dvd player. I was hoping to be able to burn it but I'm not sure I can.

Try running a CD/DVD cleaning disc in your DVD player.
If it plays on your computer, I wouldn't think the problem is the disc.

That was the first thing we did last night. I should have mentioned that in my first post. Didn't help. Plus, the player has no problem with any of the dozens of other DVDs in our house, some of which are double-sided.

One side of the disc plays just fine. The other won't even get to the menu - just garbled bits of the picture on the screen. Much worse than the minor skipping that happens with a dirty lens or smudged DVD.

It is strange, though, that it will play on the computer.

50% of the DVDs I buy these days are defective. I've figued out that you have to have a superfast DVD player now because they're trying to cut down on piracy (by forcing me and you, the law-abiding consumers to buy new equipment).

tried it on a different dvd player today an it worked just fine. apparently the problem really is with our dvd player. guess we'd better get a new lens cleaner.

ironically, i watched the series premiere on my laptop yesterday afternoon since it wouldn't play on the dvd player. take a wild guess which episode was on tv last night at 8.
