I hardly ever post on this thing but I am going to add my two cents.
Every body seems to be on the same page, the dog should have not been running loose, the car should have stopped, the people who saw the dog and didn't check on it should have to go lay on the side of the road for a day or two.
And while I there are vets that will treat animals out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it quietly or else they would be overloaded with charity cases. You should never go into a vets office with the expectation that you won't have to pay even if it not your animal. They are running a business with overhead and employees like any other business. I'm not going to work for free, I don't think anyone here is. And you are forgetting one important fact- people lie. They will look you right in the face and say "Oh not it isn't my dog but if you fix it up for free I'll give it a home, by the way he sees to answer to Fluffy". I'm sure Appy has heard how the customer "found" this really matted dog and if she would just groom it cheap it will never look like that again. Until the next year when they "find" it again. I've heard that lots of times. Some people think of their dogs as disposable- like the toaster ot microwave it is easier and cheaper to just get a new one if the old one is broken. And, yes I know a pet is not an inanimate object, but some people just don't care.
I was in the vets office a couple of years ago and a man was leaving with a beautiful dobie with a leg cast on. I said something- don't remember what- but the guy said to me " You know you would think this dog would have learned- my other dog was killed at the same place in the road last week." I looked at him and said "Here's your sign." [the big stupid sign for those who don't know Jeff Foxworthy. The dog owner didn't get it. ]
