WASHINGTON - Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry was robbed at gunpoint at his apartment by some youths who had helped him carry his groceries.

Barry, who wasn't injured in the Sunday night robbery, said he gave the youths a couple of dollars for helping him with his groceries and they left. They returned, however, and pointed a gun at his head and took his wallet, which contained cash and credit cards, Barry told WRC-TV.

Barry, 69, is a member of the City Council and served four terms as mayor. In his third term, he was videotaped in 1990 in a hotel room smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting. The following year, he served a six-month prison sentence.

He is awaiting sentencing later this month in federal court on his guilty plea to two misdemeanor counts stemming from his failure to file income tax returns in 2000.

I might just start believing in karma if stuff like this keeps up.

He was just high and was looking for an excuse as to why he was broke. "Um, no, I wasn't smoking crack, I was robbed, yeah, robbed, um...at gunpoint...I was ....buying groceries..yeah...and then they came back...an put a gun to my head...Yeah, that's the ticket."

It is very unfortunate that the gunman wasn't more nervous.........could have saved us all from further exposure to this bad joke of a human being.

I could believe he was robbed at gunpoint by some thugs. I loves me some Marion Barry every since I got my first Summer Youth job thanks to his program (though it was under Sharon Pratt Kelly when I was old enough to get one).

He needs to move from there, those apartments (before renovations) were crime ridden. The whole community goes into a dead end surrounding projects now torn down and the famous Wellington Park on the other side of Suitland Pkwy. Why he would live there is news to me. I would like to believe he makes more than I do and can afford a house, even a HUD-1 house. So you get what you pay for. He knew who his neighbors were. Pookie and Peanut can not be your neighbors unless your name is Laquisha or Mrs. Jankins. Washington View accepts Section 8 and in DC Section 8 is a whole other story. No offense to anyone TIA

Is that where they brainwash you?

No, actually it's a good program for youth of low income families. The ages are from 14-21 and they sign up in June by going downtown to the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and each teen meets with a job counselor, the application process includes checkboxing your hobbies and depending on what you like they put you in jobs related to that. Most of the jobs are in the community like working as a janitor for an apartment complex, or clerical at a WIC clinic. It keeps children off the street in the summer and you make minimum wage. I think my job paid $3.18 or something like that back in 1989. You work 3 to 8 hours a day depending on your age. You get paid weekly. I still have my first W-2 from them.

My first job was working at a elementary school down the street from my JHS and I tutored kids after school from 3:30 to 6:30pm. It was fun, use to cash my check at the 5 and dime. Then go to the carry-out and buy 2 chicken wings with Mumbo sauce and fried rice for $2.85 from the carry-out. That was the first Christmas I actually bought my mom and siblings gifts.

My second job was at the local Rec Center as a monitor. I learned to play pool, table hockey and ping pong. I got paid for having fun. I also learned more social skills with outrageous children. I use to be a punk to mean kids. If they had a mouth worse than mines or a mean mug I was shaking in my boots. They could have been 9y/o I was scared lol.

It's a good program, regardless of all his skeletons revealed he did a good thing beginning that program. I just think it's sad how Mayor Williams isn't able to keep it going as strongly because it seems that family's now are more poor and way more uneducated. It's one thing to work for almost minimum wage which was the parents we had growing up but it's another to just not have any parents working or one parent on welfare. These children need that positive outlet and the experience of working for your own money.

He may have done some good things, but his character is so scummy. My dad, a retired policeman, arrested him years ago. He punched my father, who then pulled out his nightstick and gave him a wooden shampoo. I kept the old club as a souvenir. :lmao:

Not really, be it known or not Ward 8 has always been about Barry since as long as I could remember. Though on a political standpoint (did I say that) I think you are right.

My gosh, ya'll hate Jesse, Barry, Sharpton, who else?

Harley I feel your dad on not taking no ish off an arrestee, though I can not say your dad only hit him a couple of times, as most police officers usually go nuts and beat the crap out of a detainee out of hand. Though I personally wouldn't have put myself in the position to be beaten in the first place by a white officer if I was a black man. I would have reverted back to the days of Masta' (not really) because otherwise you are just asking to get killed.

This is not to say that white officers are racist but the situation is surely to become racial, most likely on the black man's part. Sad to say. The race card would be played. My personal walk would be that of listen, speak when spoken to, or if the situation is serious, in the presence of my attorney, be respectful, upstanding (inspite of the given situation) and hope the process goes over smoothly. Unfortunately, there are a lot of police officers who just like aggitating the situation, out of boredom. Not all, but some, and of all races.

Too bad things go that way on either part. Where is Barry living now? My husband seems to think it is around District Heights in a house, but I say in an apartment (from the story) in his district, 8th or whatever?Did his wife gets the nice house he used to live in after he was Mayor? Or am I just completely innacurate on all accounts? By the way Lexi, I really like your posts and you have taken alot of criticism in stride and not resorted to the name calling etc. we often see. :yay:
