My DirecTV has been working perfectly all day and I am hooked by S video cable btwn Tivo box to TV and have never had a problem. Someone would probably have to check cable connections and what video input you need to select on your TV to see what the problem is.

Is there such a thing as an s cord with two connections ?

I'm not 100% sure, but by any chance do you have your DirecTV receiver connected by a S video cable to an output on the surround sound system? S video only does not support audio. I would connect that cable to the TV.

Do you have a model number on your sound system?

If your TV has an HDMI connector you're really screwing yourself by not using it...

Is this a basic Directv receiver or an HD receiver?

True Stereo TV Sound Story

What do you mean it's black and white? Are you talking about the sound or video?
Here is a true story about the debut of MTS [Multichannel Television Sound] on NBC.
I was a member of the EIA/NAB BTSC MTSC [broadcast television standards committee multichannel television sound subcommittee] and we wrote the US standard for analog stereo TV broadcasting for the FCC. I guess you can see why we used the initials.
One of our members, Randy Hoffner who was with NBC, was invited to be on The Tonight Show to introduce the system's first use there. So as a practical joke, as the switch was thrown to turn on the stereo light on the new TVs, the guys at NBC killed the croma subcarrier, instantly putting the broadcast into black and white. This was done without telling any producers or talent- a rare technogeek prank done without consent of the talent.

The sound is fine. What the problem is .... I have a sony dream system surround sound w/ five dvd changer. When I watch dvd's they are in black and white not color. I can't figure out how to fix it. If I switch the s cord to the dvd/surround sound from the direct tv receiver then I can watch the movies in color. I don't want to do that everytime I watch a movie. I have the direct tv/dvr. I don't have a high definition television yet. I'm planning on getting a flat screen tv sometime next year.

How is the DVD connected to the TV without the "S" Video Cable? (S-Video cable is picture ONLY - no sound)...

Do you have a component connection input on the TV???

What input choices do you have on the back of the TV? - this might help us/others give you some advice...

Better yet, if you've got a digital camera, take a picture of the back of the tv, the dream system, and dvr, then we can tell you where to hook up the cables...

Post them as attachments...

I can make my DVDs play in black and white, check your remote and there should be a "picture" button. Press it a few times and see if the DVDs now switch to color.

Use the S video cable from your Direct TV receiver to your TV. That will give you a good picture. (picture only, S cable gives no sound) Now use a Coax Digital cable from your DVD player to your surround sound receiver to watch DVD's. that will give you the best sound and picture. Use your input button AUX button to switch signals whe n you watch TV or DVD's.

I was thinking that as well... However there is a problem with my direct tv. My channels go out while I am watching them. The direct tv guy will be here to fix in on thursday. I'll have him check it out then. If not I give up .
