Direct TV

So I got a mailer from Metrocast telling me how wonderful they are and how they will save me $500 if I switch from Direct TV.

I sincerely doubt I will, actually I am pretty sure I won't switch but Direct TV doesn't know that.

So I am going to call and cancel Direct TV.......kinda......and when they put me on to the "loss prevention" department who tries to talk you into staying, I am going to extort a discount or a couple months free out of them.

I do not feel dirty about this at all because they scam customers all the time with their "deals" and packages and blah blah.

Anyone have any good stories about how much you got them to give up to keep you as a customer? I need a baseline to set as a goal.

Let me know how that works. I'll go next.

You're a LOON :)
I want to hear how it goes for you. We have had directv for 6 years and just got an HDTV and I want to upgrade to the HD service and HD DVR. I called Directv and I am not under a contract with them anymore. They told me to get the HD DVR I had to pay $199 and sign a 2 year contract. Umm I don't think so. So I am checking out Comcast and then was planning to call Directv and cancel and see if they offered me anything to stay.

for me. I called at my old house and told them I was switching to Comcast. They offered me free Starz and Encore for 6 months and 2 free months of service. I used the free stuff and switched 6 months later.

See I have nearly every damn channel they have. When I first went with them I got the promotional deal for a year, thein it went to full price. Every few months they would call and say "For just $12 more you can get XXXX and YYYY and ZZZZ." Well now I am up quite a bit and have nearly every damn channel they have.

A while back I tried to cut back because we didn't really watch that many movies after all. Of course because of my "package Blah blah, if you remove blah blah it will actually cost you more blah blah" so I just kept it the way it is. So now years later I want some payback biatch!" Evey month I do the electronic payment for .....well it is a pretty good amount ........ and now I want some good faith, some quid pro quo, some back scratching.

The only extra stuff I get is the football package, so I probably have some wiggle room. I'll do it tomorrow, but we don't have the same circumstances. Every time they give me something for free for being a wonderful customer for x many years (?), I never watch those channels anyway. I'd just like a price cut. Seems to us the football channel keeps going up every year. Is that right? I just get all the football games, no pre-season, etc. We can't get HD because of all the trees.

I get a coupon for a buy on get one free up to $4.99 pay per view once a quarter. That is NOT the scratch I want. I suppose they figure the 1 month of the Bull Riding channel or game channel is a "deal" but I just eat beef don't care to watch a boy legged guy ride it first and sitting and doing a crossword puzzle with my remote isn't my idea of a deal.

I am done with the Football Package. Being a Baltimore fan I was able to catch just about all of the games on regular TV. This is the first year it has been like that. The DC channels would not play them for some reason. I think there were 2 games that we had to use the Sunday Ticket package for. So next year for a lot less than $300.00 I can go to a bar for those 2 games.

Last year during the annual rate hike I called and spoke to retention and told them Dish was going to give me a better deal(which was true) so I was given the following.....

$20 off total choice package for 1 year

Free HD access and extra pack for 1 year

No DVR fee for 1 year

Free Showtime for 1 year

Free HBO and Cinemax for 1 year.

I really didn't expect as much as I got so I was pleasantly surprised. I was pretty happy in the end cause the last thing I wanted to do was switch.

Being the rate hikes are coming again in March I believe?? I think I need to call retention again.

Did you already have all that or did they add it for free for a year?

I had a HD, DVR and HBO only. The other stuff they offered.

The only thing I don't have is a DVR. I will try them. First I will have to get my angry consumer game face on which will be hard because I am not actually angry, I just want to extort a free month or two out of them with a fake cancellation threat.

Knowing how this type of crap works for me I will end up with another dish, 3 more TV hook ups and a bill double what it is now.

You need to get rid of that avatar, it is totally distracting and I can't read any posts that are around it when its on the screen. Plus my neck is getting sore from following the bouncing 'balls'.

We switched back to DTV a few years ago. We received 3 or 4 months Skinemax free (plus some other channels I can't remember), a free receiver for a year, plus something like $50 a month off for a year. All this just for rejoining.

I would have never thought of calling them to negotiate a better deal. Thanks for sharing the idea.
