I think the disc drive in my laptop is fried. Is it worth taking to get repaired? Computer is 4 yrs old. What would be a reasonable repair price? thank you.

Depending on what laptop it is, its as easy as buying a new one and installing it. Most of the time its just one screw and a locking tab holding them in there.

If the disc is actually damaged, there's little chance that it can be repaired at all, and it is almost always cheaper to simply replace it, which is not hard.

Thank's Floyd and Sam. Think I will do that. Does anyone know if there is a trustworthy computer place in Leonardtown that would prolly stock them and stick it in for me? :howdy::howdy:

Hmm might have to order the drive from a laptop parts store online.

I have been on line with HP's self help chat. The person ("Sriveni") was very nice and polite and had me do several attempts to fix the problem. Finally he (she?) emailed me some more things to try. We'll see how it goes...but I really think I need to do what I originally said. Have a great day.

Take the drive out, get the part number off of it and goto SmartCo in Lex Park. See if they have a used one.

OK, I may do that. Do you know if Chesapeake PC Source on Rt. 5 in Leonardtown is OK?

SMARTCO is more likely to have a drive for you and will be cheaper. They are a non-profit that takes old gov't surplus machines and refurbs them and passes them on to other non-profits/schools or scraps/recycles them for their precious metal content to fund further operations.

OK. I just called and left a message asking for their hours tomorrow. Thank you.
