Dishwashers

But wait, there's more...
Anyone bought a new one lately? Seems I'm in the market to replace mine. Had the service guy out last week and he said it's either the touch panel or the computer, but given the appliance is about 6 years old, and the cost to replace either the panel or the computer is about $150, even he said I might as well just buy a new one.

I currently have a Whirlpool Gold with more bells & whistles than I can use, so I don't need anything crazy/fancy; function and performance are my primary concerns. Also, considering all my other appliances are black & stainless steel this one will need to be as well.

Any recommendations? I have access to Sears, Lowes & Home Depot (and many more, I'm sure, but those are the big 3 when it comes to appliances).

I have a black Kenmore elite. It's the 2nd one I have had and I love it. It's quiet. My only requirement when I got this one, was that you can raise or lower the top rack. This helps accomadate large pans and such. Really nice when you have cooked for a 'crowd'.

We seem to replace our dishwasher about every 5 years. They sure don't make 'em like they used to. The last one we bought was a Fridgidaire, but I wouldn't say it cleans dishes any better than the off the wall brand we had before. I think that was a Hotpoint or GE.

They DEFINATELY don't make 'em like they used to, E! My dad had the same dishwasher for at least 15 years, and only just replaced it last year because the door hinge broke and he couldn't get a new part for it. Now, I think it's these daggone electronics that fail in the short time vs. the mechanics of it.

I like the idea of having the flexibility to raise/lower the upper rack to accomodate taller pots/pans when needed, and the sanitize feature on some models (e.g., for cutting boards and whatnot). I'll keep that in mind when shopping around. :yay:

If you're looking high-end, I've heard Bosch is the way to go. I have a KitchenAid that's about 5 years old and have never had a problem with it, but it is a bit noisier than I would like.

The best dw I ever had was in a rental when we first moved here. It must have been original to the house. I could put anything in it and it would come out clean.

This one has the sanitize feature also. Two other things I like about mine:
The inside is stainless steel. So I never have to use the dry option (steel holds the heat better).

And it has a 'turbo' zone. I don't often put pots/pans in it and usually rinse before loading (I don't run it every day) but if I do load with no rinse the turbo zone scrubs em clean.

It is a electronic touch panel tho. That is a draw back but not enough to worry about with the other features I like.

I'm definately NOT looking for "high-end" per se ... rather, I just want my dishes clean when they come out. I like basic options like delay start, pot/pan cycle for extra cleaning when needed, the sanitizer option, and the flexibility of adjusting the height of the top rack to allow for larger pots/pans.

Lowes has a Frigidaire that I like thus far. It holds 14 place settings and has most of the features I want ... and it's only $325. :yay:

If I'm going to have to replace this thing every 5-6 years, I'm not going to spend a ton of money on 'em. :nono:

We got a similar but slightly different model a few months ago. :yay: Works great, and it's so quiet compared to the 12 year old one we replaced.

Does anyone know what the plate warmer option is for? Aside from the drying cycle, why would you have/want your plates warm when you take them out of the d/w?

Gotcha. You're not going to spend thousands of dollars to get the latest and greatest - just something basic that does the job well.

If I remember correctly from reading Consumer Reports, Frigidaire doesn't have a good repair history nor good energy efficiency. I'm almost positive this month's issue has a review on dishwashers. I check tonight when I get home and see what they say.

My KitchenAid has the adjustable top rack and I will definitely get that again when the time comes to replace it. :yay:

Some people like their food served on warm plates. Seems like a waste to me.

Here DQ, Mommy loves you so much, she's serving up your spaghettio's in a warm bowl.

:sarcasm:

Definately NOT going with a Bosch ... a d/w twice the price of the Frigidaire (which has comparable models in other brands for the same price) doesn't have half the features ... again, if I'm going to have to get a new one in 5 years, I'm not dropping a ton of dough on one now.

I'll just stick it outside for awhile. It will be 90 degrees that time of the year. :hot:

But you won't be replacing the Bosch in 5 years, or 10 years..
