A restructuring and H-1B use affect the Magic Kingdom’s IT operations

At the end of October, IT employees at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts were called, one-by-one, into conference rooms to receive notice of their layoffs. Multiple conference rooms had been set aside for this purpose, and in each room an executive read from a script informing the worker that their last day would be Jan. 30, 2015.

Some workers left the rooms crying; others appeared shocked. This went on all day. As each employee received a call to go to a conference room, others in the office looked up sometimes with pained expressions. One IT worker recalls a co-worker mouthing "no" as he walked by on the way to a conference room.

What follows is a story of competing narratives about the restructuring of Disney's global IT operations of its parks and resorts division. But the focus is on the role of H-1B workers. Use of visa workers in a layoff is a public policy issue, particularly for Disney.

From the perspective of five laid-off Disney IT workers, all of whom agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity, Disney cut well-paid and longtime staff members, some who had been previously singled out for excellence, as it shifted work to contractors. These contractors used foreign labor, mostly from India. The laid-off workers believe the primary motivation behind Disney's action was cost-cutting.

"Some of these folks were literally flown in the day before to take over the exact same job I was doing," said one of the IT workers who lost his job. He trained his replacement and is angry over the fact he had to train someone from India "on site, in our country."

Now that Disney is saving all of this money I am sure the ticket prices will fall drastically.:sarcasm:

Wouldn't it be great if so many Americans stopped going there that it had to close?

Unfortunately businesses are free to do this because there are no laws that say not to. Is it bad for us as a country? Yes. But they are only concerned about the bottom line in the short term. The only way to keep companies from laying off Americans and outsourcing the jobs to other countries is to make it either illegal or financially painful to do so. To do so would be to invite criticism of government interfering with businesses and messing with the profits of companies.

Disney is over $100 per day, over two years old. I live about 100 miles from there, and even with my grand kids here, I will not return. The CEO bluntly said at their last price increase something like "We will continue to raise rates as long as all these people are willing to pay it".

Patrons, like a family of four, can reasonably expect to pay over $600 for a 10 hour day, which will include about 5 hours waiting in line, for entrance, food, some cheap souvenirs, and a lot of sweat.

Lemmings, like Starbucks and apple patrons.

Harsh, I know, but Disney is as harsh, or worse.

I am in total agreement with you.

Unto dust we shall return
These are usually self-correcting problems as businesses generally have to hire back large parts of their staffs to fix what the Indian workers have dorked up.

yeah they were but you aren't much for facts .

... I have been in an airport several times in the last 10 yrs

you can ofc post FACTS, not flippant replies; [you are the one with the rhetoric about republicans - where are your news stories]

from the article:
1. Disney fires Americans to save money ...
2. Disney Replaces Terminated Employees with H1B Visa Holders at a cheaper rate

so based on your conjecture, you have a news article or other factual statements made in the 80's when Reagen had the ATC fired,

1 it was to save money
2 they were replaced with H1B visa holders at a cheaper price

let us widen the net some:

you have some other articles, when Republicans fired Americans and hired H1B Visa Holders

:tap:

isn't this the part where you should be SHILLING for IT Workers to UNIONIZE ... after all that vast bastion of Conservationism Califuku us also dumping Americans for Visa Holders

I am waiting ..................
