Distracted living

You know, it's not just distracted driving, or distracted parenting - we're living these weird distracted lives. Why is it so impossible to keep your eye on the ball??

This morning I was coming north on 235 and as I approached San Souci (my destination) I saw that there was something going on at the main entrance: a fire truck, several ambulances, etc. So I stayed in the thru lane to go up, turn around, and enter San Souci the other way. But there were at least 8 cars in the turn lanes because apparently they didn't see or realize that the entrance was blocked. Or did they just think they could barrel past the emergency vehicles?? I don't know, but I saw it and made the connection right away, and it's not like I'm some raving genius and bastion of cognitive superiority. What seems to be the problem here?

The other day I was in the Giant parking lot and this girl was walking up the lane, talking on her cellphone. I gave her some space and began to pass her, when without warning or even a glance up she veered left and I came thisclose to hitting her. Good thing one of us was paying attention, huh?

I mean, what the hell? What is it? Why are people so freaking oblivious?

Society is now full of what I call "Oblivians", these are people who are oblivious to what's around them, they think the world revolves around them and people will move out of their way for them. These are the people who push their cart down the wrong isle and then don't understand why people won't get out of their way, these are the people who drive like they own the road, who turn their turn signal on and immediately make a lane change without looking because in their head they signaled that they are changing lanes and you have to let them over. These are the same people who fly down the turn lane every after noon on 235, duck behind Wa-Wa because they are too important to wait in traffic like everyone else. These are the same people who are constantly on their cellphone while driving, even on base, because, damn it, they are important. These are the same people who wait to the last minute then cut over three lanes of traffic to make the left into the base at Pegg rd.

Our society has turned into the "me" society, they expect everything move out of their way, that they are the center of the universe and the world has to cater to them. There are oblivians all around us, most are easy to spot because they are usually the stupidest morons you see.

I agree... I've been saying for years. People are so wrapped up in their own little world they are oblivious to what's going on around them. It causes problems walking, driving and everything else we do. How many times have been driving through a shopping center parking lot and some moron just walks right out in front of you and never even looks and then just keeps walking, they had know idea they almost got run over.
I believe this May have been a contributing factor in the child that died on base last week. Dad was so wrapped up in his own little bubble he had know idea what was going on around him. Not an excuse, just a thought.
People need to pay attention !

See a microcosm of this in the break room at work when the majority of folks cocoon themselves in their electronic devices.

I use to work with this moron (he got fired) when he would go out to eat he was constantly on his I-Phone, The waitress would ask him what he would like to drink he would simply respond "yes".

I took it as space(ial) awareness, ie, being aware of what is around you at all times, commonly known as situational awareness or being aware of your surroundings.

I see dumb people, they're all around me. They just don't know they are dumb.

The first time I saw the word "oblivion" I believe was on this forum. It was used to describe drivers who just putted along at a leisurely pace seemingly oblivious to the travel jam they were creating.

I was on Clark's Landing Road today and saw a young woman walking toward a house from the mailbox it appeared, yapping on her phone looking straight to the house and a little tiny toddler in diapers was trailing behind her. He was so close to the road and Clarks' Landing road is like a race track right along there. Ignorant biatch and poor dear child.

This is now why I go the back way to PF (grays to sixes to adelina) because of all the accidents on 4. I try to maintain my safe zone. There are very few cars the back way; there are just a few mean curves that you have to watch out for. That descent at Cypress Swamp is scary. Don't put on your breaks! Your car doesn't understand; kind of like a race horse! :jet:
