DO NOT go to Walmart for an oil change!

I just wanted to warn everyone around here, if you are thinking about going to Walmart for an oil change, change your mind! I took my mini-van there (California Walmart) to get an oil change. The next time I drove it, I noticed there was something seriously wrong with the motor. I decided to take it to a friend who is a mechanic, who discovered there was no oil in my engine! I took my vehicle to Walmart because, as advertised, they have great deals on oil changes and I am a single mother with two kids, so great deals are always great for me. Now I am stuck without a vehicle, and a van that is going to cost me $5,000 for a replacement motor. When I contacted Walmart, they told me they would take care of me and that they were really sorry and everything. In order for them to do that I had to file a claim through their insurance company. The claims adjuster told me it would take 5-7 days to retrieve the surveilance videos from Walmart. So the next day I got a phone call from him stating that all of the procedures were properly followed by the employee that changed my oil, and that they weren't going to be able to do anything for me. So I began getting a bit defensive, thinking how in the world can they deny me within such a short period of time (it hadn't been 24 hours yet), and on top of that, the employees in the store basically admitted fault. Anyway, the claims adjuster said "All I can tell you is CLAIM DENIED" and HE HUNG THE PHONE UP!

Long story short, I went to Walmart, paid for an oil change, they didn't put any oil back in my car, then my motor blew up! I get a phone call from the insurance claims adjuster, and all he could tell me was "claim denied" before he hung up on me. I am not trying to get pitty, but I am a single mother of two with a serious heart condition that has led me to not be able to work, I have a very limited income, and now I have no vehicle to transport my kids in, much less $5,000 to spend on a replacement motor all because Walmart forgot to put oil back in my van when they changed it. So just a warning - DO NOT take your vehicle into Walmart's mechanic shop.

you should call 7 on your side.. I am sure Walmart would not like the national attention!

Wal-mart makes a Quadrillion dollars a minute and everyone says they hate them just before they go there to shop anyway. They don't care about publicity.

Since they said their security videos showed they did everything right, they shouldn't have an issue with you looking at them.

If not hire a lawyer.. or go the welfare office and ask them to pay for your repairs..

Interesting that your heart is so bad you can't work, but you're still allowed to drive.. kind of scary for the rest of us on the road.

Maybe they didn't put the thing on the bottom back on tight enough and so it fell out? then it would look as if they did everything right but just a little thing wrong, later it would be a problem, not while on camera, kwim?

(yeah, yeah, laugh at me. I cant remember what the stupid thing is called right now )

We're all mad here.
Let your insurance company sue Wal Mart. YW.

:yeahthat:

I've taken my van to that Wal-Mart for oil changes ever since I received it in October. I put a lot of miles on my cars, so I've had it changed about three or four times there. I've never had any trouble with them, but mistakes do happen (not that I'm not thinking twice about returning after hearing this story). I would definitely put in a claim with your insurance company and let them deal with it. In the mean time, you should try to look for a new car/van because, if they accept your claim, they may declare the car a total loss if it's KBB value is less than 5k. Hope everything works out regardless of whatever path you take! :huggy:

Are you talking about the engine oil filter? I know you can really screw up/kill your engine if it's loose due to oil leakage.

Didn't the oil light come on?
If there was no oil when you picked your car up, the oil light should have i come on when you started you car.
A bright RED light in the middle of your dash.
Did you ignore the bright red light on your dash?

I have my oil changed at WalMart all the time. I once had Jiffy Lube forget to tighten the plug all the way. Of course, between the puddle of oil and the idiot light telling me that the oil was low, it was caught before there was any harm done. No matter where I have my oil changed, I ALWAYS make sure there are no drips and no lights come on!!

Is it the IDIOT light that you refer to??

That and if there was NO oil in it I would think the engine would have seized in the parking lot..

A few things could go wrong here, at least two could lead to delayed destruction of the engine. If the drain plug were not tightened, ti could have vibrated loose over time. Another is that the tech might not have removed the gasket from the old filter, they sometimes adhere to the engine, and dont come off. If that happened, oil would be leaking out during operation, and not so much when the engine was off.

Neither of these would be caught by a camera. I haven't actually seen the cam in the work bays, that would be my first step, to see where those are, and to see the footage they say clears them.

My bet? They overtightened and stripped the plug. It held long enough to get out of the lot until there was a "strain" on the engine, and then..............pow!

Thinking the same thing. I'll bet if you go back to the bay at WalMart where the car was worked on, you'll see a trail of oil leading away. It pizzed out over time.

Not necceseraly....Dil went to another establishment(can't remember the name of the place) to get the oil changed in her dad's truck....they changed the oil and apparently forgot to replace it....she went about 3 miles and the engine seized on the side of the road
