What is this "God" you'd like me to believe in?

If God is Absolute Truth and the source of all existence and functions according to logic, then I'm quite certain that God is very real.

If God is a magic three-headed sky-zombie that you can boss around by reciting mystic incantations at your own belly button, then I haven't seen the slightest evidence for such a thing.

I'm just curious where we stand as a demographic. There seem to be a lot of atheists on here, but maybe it's just because they're the vocal minority?

It does seem the believers are less verbose.

I grew up catholic before coming to my senses.
Some questions/concerns always come up for me:

1. If there was a God, why are there so many different religions? Who is right? Are they all wrong? Science always explains things in a logical way for me.
2. Organized religion helped bring order to chaos by instilling fear on to people. On a good note, it fosters somewhat decent morals by promoting faith and kindness.
3. I have seen religion at its best and at its worst. More of the latter than the former.

We are children of the God of Abraham. Abraham may of messed up a little but he was the start of Judea, Catholicism, and Islam. Why things went wrong or right will always be subject of debate. JMHO

I was talking to a guy at work who does not believe on god but he doesnt believe in darwinism. He made a good point that made me think, if you beieve in god then there is only one planet in the entire universe that has life, it doesnt state anywhere in the bible of other places other than heaven hell and this paradise that he created. If you believe in science and that this universe contains variations of life we have never seen, then god must not exist. Like i said this was his theory. I believe in god but i dont beleve in religion, i see religion as a form of government. And to me its a way to give people meening.

Now from the same guy he doesnt believe in darwinism due to the fact that most species that evolve the entire species does it at the same time. You dont see a monkey thats can walk upright but still has the features of a monkey. He believes in aliens and such.

And for anyone who has the time and patience watch this movie it will make you think

I have stated before that I find this arena to be a private one. Like many choices in this life, folks want to debate and deliver "proof" of right and wrong, condoning or supporting beliefs of individuals.

Organized religion and God as Our Father, provides a wonderful source of strenghth and integrity and offers belief and unity like I've never seen; inside a church is a peaceful place to be. Many have made peace with life by making peace with God, thus not turning dark and angry like so many have. The support system tends to be strong in many churches.

As someone who has a science background, I also understand why there are so many who find it so hard to believe in God when there is so much scientific evidence to support otherwise. And I'll leave it at that.

I am not in either of those groups. I believe in God. I believe in the Spirit of Christ (historically and religiously for those who celebrate him) - but not as a Christian, per se. But mostly I believe in Spirituality.

As I posted in another thread, I try to identify, not compare, thus not conforming to a any one set standard of morality or virtue. Thus, my belief system in God. My own, perhaps.

Both these statements are not necessarily true. I happen to be a Christian, but I do not discount the idea that there isn't any other life out there in the Universe. All things are possible with God. If He wanted to created a different world with different forms of life, why should I object? I'm not a UFO enthusiast at all, but I do regard UFO stories with mild interest. So far, I haven't seen anything definitively convincing, though.

On the other front, there are Christians who believe in the Big Bang theory and what is known as theististic evolution, the idea that God uses evolution as the mechanism for creation. That life and the cosmos are guided along by God through naturalistic means.

BTW, I voted "Yes" on the poll.

They tend to have issues, well, past experience has proven that.

I used to think this way as well, but over the last few years, I have began studying the bible with a non denominational group which is a change from the Catholic study groups I have taken part in.

Indeed, organized religion has become something in excess and has taken out the true core meaning of Christianity.

I have often thought if evolution was true, I would have a giant eye in the back of my head and a few extra arms, as a mom, I could surely use that. But God's purpose is beyond our understanding and only the prideful will question it. The bible tells us to have faith like a child.

There isn't a thing wrong with having faith. I have seen faith get me through things in my own life that I never thought I had the strength to overcome and deal with, and I have seen it work in others lives as well.

John 10:16 (New International Version)

I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

Yes.

I’m a Christian. I started out Catholic until about age thirteen when my Mom started taking us to Protestant churches. I’ve always believed that God created everything but he did have a process in doing so and that’s where science comes in.

Yes, I do. However, I have almost zero faith in organized religion. Too many interpretations and beliefs over the years, created by man- which I don't have a lot of faith in. In fact, I think mankind gets more foolish every day.

Do you believe in God? 07-19-2007 01:09 PM you're a moron

Seeing as how it's green, I wonder who the moron is?

On a side note, it's always nice to see people with no sense of humor. I look at them and think about how much worse life could be. You know, if you're choice is go through life without humor, or just comit suicide, it's wiser to pick suicide. Let me know if you need help forming a plan. :yay:
