My daughter bought two pairs of jeans recently. She loved them but they were a bit too long to wear with the shoes she liked. I thought, "Why don't we get them hemmed professionally instead of the sorry job I might do?"
The dry cleaners in Leonardtown does alterations so I took them there. I never asked what it would cost because I remember having my husband's uniforms altered and it was pretty cheap. I should have asked!!! They charged $36 to hem both pairs of jeans!!! I just about fainted.

Does this seem like the going rate or was I ripped off? The alterations cost more than both pairs of jeans combined!

Just curious what others have paid for similar work. Thanks!

Tell them to keep the damn jeans and go buy new ones for less. You're welcome.

Yes, that is very high. Jeans generally will be a bit costlier to alter because of the denim material being thick. I recently had a pair hemmed and they charged me $20, I'm in Calvert.

If you are saying, $18 per pair/$9 per leg; that is not too bad. My daughter usually pays $20 per pair, as Truck said, and she lives in Montgomery County.

Well then you would have paid $40 for two pair... which makes $36 quite reasonable.

They can charge whatever they want because, who the hell wants to hem a pair of jeans let alone two pairs themselves?! Mine are always too long so I just let them drag.

I took a dress there to have hemmed. The girl that worked behind the counter told me it would cost $18.00, she said to go to the cleaners by the Food Lion in LT. They were cheaper. I like the little asian woman who runs the cleaners in LT, but, since she took it over, prices have gone up.

It takes time and experience to dismantle an existing hem and then to correctly "mark" it and make a new professional looking hem. Like it was pointed out there are two hemming events for each pair of pants. Jeans bring an extra "challenge" to the process because of the thickness of the material.

I love :)sarcasm:) when people don't want to pay for skills they haven't acquired. Take making wedding cakes for example, people get bent at the cost of a professionally baked, decorated, delivered and staged wedding cake but if they would stop to actually think about the time, effort, skill set and stress that goes into such a production they would be able to see the justification for what businesses charge.

I would have found some chinese kid to do it for $2. That more than they get paid working in the factories.
Yeah, but when you factor in the cost of traveling to China to find that kid you are more than doubling the cost of $36 for two pairs of jeans. Way more.

Would be cheaper in the long run! You are the last post I am reading tonight. Thanks for the laugh!

Use the bachelor sewing machine.

Staple the new hem and then mark over the staples with a sharpie to blend in the color
