Does This Sound Like A Deer???

I went on my normal route for a walk this morning which takes me past a wooded area and a big field. I've never seen or heard anything along that way and I've been going past it for a few months now. This morning I heard a lot of noise like branches rustling but I was on the other side of the road and I couldn't see anything. And didn't think much of it. On the way back however, I heard the same thing only louder with heavy breathing, not human, definitely animal and what sounded like a growl but it was an odd growl. Do deers do that? I guess I'm a little spooked since I read the thread on big cats or maybe I caught too much of Halloween this weekend. Anybody out there experienced enough to know if deer can be noisy or territorial?

Deer don't growl. When they walk, it will sound just like a person stomping though the woods with intermittent stops. Deer do make a snorting noise especially when people are near and they can't figure out what or where it is.

Deer have been known to grunt when they are spooked but growl? I don't think so. Did you hear it running away? If not I'm sure it wasn't a deer. I would pick another walk route. It might be a dog....

 Had lunch at Lenny's with some folks from work and I explained where the Jackalopes on there wall came from.
She came in to work the next day all mad, evidently she had passed on the explanation to some folks that got a big laugh at her expense.

Did they catch those cats that were up around Andrews AFB? Could be one of them.

Deer grunt and snort. The grunt is a much lower and gutteral noise. They produce the noise the same way goats and sheep "baah" but its much lower.

A snort is kindof like a real breathy sneeze or a cough. It can be very high pitch and startling. I've never heard it repeated more than a couple times, but it has definetly scared the Sheet out of me on walks to the treestand in the dark.

Here's what I think happened: you got too close to a momma with a new baby... she wasn't about to leave because of the baby, so she basically stood her ground, stomped and sneezed (snorted) at you.

Or it could have been a terradactyl.

It must have been a deer then. Gutteral is exactly the way I would have described the noise if I had thought about it. And the rustling was too noisy to have been a dog. Deers aren't aggressive are they? The noise was loud enough for me to think this can't be good and I don't easily scare.

I think you should bring your gun on your next walk. You get get some exercise and, possibly, dinner.

Hate venison! And as far as the gun is concerned, I picture the deer attacking me, wrestling the gun out of my hand, using it on me, and inviting all it's deer friends for potlock. Deers aren't meatasaurs are they? I think I'll stick with "my roll up in a ball and play dead" line of defense.
