Oh itsbOb - yeah it's sounds like a song ........

we already have a cat here named after you - are you trying for another animal? :smoochy:

We REALLY need another sponsor for a critter to fix so let me know if you want to help  .

You need to reboot the bark circuit..

Take your forefinger and middle finger of one hand and place them in each ear trying to get a good seal..

Place the thumb of your other hand up his butt..

Blow into his nose as hard as you can..

That should re-boot the bark circuit.

If that doesn't work, you may need to hard boot the circuit, but that's kind of disgusting. You have to switch the thumb and the blowing around to push the bark valve on the bark circuit the other way.

Aww so sorry - I have several ferals "turned house cats" that never meow - most ferals seem to NOT make sounds? However 1 of them is only "half"feral as his father was a domesticated cat.

It's pretty quiet around here, especially with the non-barking dog ! LOL :killingme

I had a cat once that struggled to get out a little "meow". His name was Mason and I miss him.

Let me alter my feral cat sound statement - IF they have been FIXED they don't make much in the way of sounds .......

I liked it when a perp once broke in and didn't know I had a Doberman!:killingme No barking and walking on cat-like feet..gotcha!:yahoo:

This same scenario happened with a friend of mine who had a lovely Dobie. Bad person breaks in. Dobie sits and watches. Bad person makes it to dining room. Dobie says you can come in but you can't leave. Dobie didn't bother bad person til he panicked and ran for the door. Dobie just chewed bad person's pants leg. Didn't really hurt bad person. Neighbor heard the ruckus and came over.

HE yelped/barked?

Okay so after this thread and the replies I've had (including PM's), I decided to take him to the barn where he would have an array of critters to potentially bark at. He saw cats, horses, people he didn't know ..... I confined him to a strong line - well when I walked away from him he yelped - okay so he's done that before - sort of an odd yelp/strained sound like you mentioned. I encouraged him and kept walking away and he did it again. However he did NOT bark at the cats or the horses but he did show an interest in them.

Over the next few hours he had many opportunities to watch me walk away and almost every time he mustered a sound like a yelp/bark. I had several people there say it sounded like an attempt to bark to them, but with a yelp attached.

Hmmm so I'm still not sure if he is debarked but I do know at least he IS trying to bark (albeit ONLY at ME to say don't leave me). Now, how to get him to "bark/yelp" when he hears sounds (like most dogs do)? So far the only trigger for a bark response from him is when I am moving away from him and he is confined or tied.

Call me what you will but I want my dog to be suspicious of strangers unless I convey it's okay to be otherwise - you know? I want my dog to bark to alert ME of sounds/knocks on the door/etc. Why is this dog not alerting me?

De-barked dogs bark, but it just sounds like they've lost their voice. Very hoarse.

PS - I think it's quite ironic that I went from having a dog that barked at EVERYTHING (RIP baby) to one that doesn't bark ...... very odd transition to make for me.

My last boxer didn't bark until he was almost 2 years old. He NEVER barked at anyone at the door or any noises. He would come find me but that was it. The first time he barked was playing tug of war with me. We couldn't get him to bark at anything.

Yes I have heard of dogs that just don't feel compelled to bark - like I said prior, it's a dream come true for some folks who want a non-barking dog. Hmm so far he doesn't even come find me, but then again I rarely have a stranger at my door.

We never could get him to bark at anything but me?? We tried ringing the door bell and making a lot of noise outside. He would run to the window and look out. I would have like for him to bark. Hopefully the new pup will be a barker.

I'd like to know how it is that I ended up with a dog that does NOT bark? He's an American Bulldog Mix. Is it breed related?

It was suggested to me that MAYBE someone had him de-barked? I just don't think so, as he CAN make a sort of whining/yelping sort-of sound at times (if I walk away from him when he's outside playing). He was only 18 months to 2 years old when I adopted him at the P G County shelter about 6 months ago.

I'm sure a non-barking dog would be a DREAM COME TRUE for some people, but I actually LIKE dogs that bark! This is the first dog I've ever had that doesn't bark and it's weird.

As strange as it may seem, my girl boxer did not bark till I got my boy boxer. :coffee:

hmmmmm - well he was around a female a few months, and he didn't bark around her, then again she was pretty timid and wasn't interested in playing either ....
