Mr. Perfect, being a Schnoodle, has curly hair. He's a bit shaggy right now, which makes him look even cuter - something I didn't think possible.

Does he *have* to get regular haircuts? As in, is there a real reason other than to keep him looking spiffy? I brush him every day and he gets bathed weekly, and his bangs aren't covering his eyes or anything. Do I need to keep him trimmed up anyway?

If you are grooming him with a good brushing every day, there is no reason to get him clipped. Maybe just a Summer Clip so that he's cool & comfy. I only get mine groomed, because I've gotten lazy about the daily rigors. He should be just fine. Show some pictures if you can!

He's around 2 or so. Housebroken, well-behaved, no jail for him because he's such a good boy. And of course he sleeps right up next to me. I'll get up in the morning to go to the bathroom, come back and find him snoozing on my pillows. Little brat. But he doesn't shed, doesn't stink, and isn't grubby, so I haven't tried to break him of this habit.

You will know when he needs grooming. You will want to keep an eye on his ear hair... you may have to learn to pluck the ear fur in order to avoid ear infections from packed in fur... and you will want to keep his foot pats trimmed... especially if you have hardwood floors and/or stairs as the extra furry feet cause loss of traction. In the winter the extra fur between the toes will get ice balls stuck in them when he goes out so you need to check his feet when he comes in during the winter. Other than that, as long as you are regularly brushing him I can think of no reason that he has to be regularly trimmed. He is quite handsome!

Too bad we cant say that about husbands and S/O's LOL.

I find that the easiest and safest way to trim the toe fur is with a human battery operated "personal" trimmer... one of the ones you can use without a guard that gentley buzzes away the delicate areas. That way you can do it frequently without fear of hurting his toe pads.

I use this... Wahl 8064-900 Half Pint. Wahl Clippers & Trimmers - Hair Clippers/Trimmers - By Wahl #8064-900 - 043917806495 at Goodman's Small Appliances Housewares and Parts

He does look like a handsome boy. If you do decide to get him groomed sometime and want to keep that longer doodle look take him to Wendy at Companion Care in Mechanicsville. She's groomed our two Goldendoodles for the last 4 years.

You don't need to get him groomed as long as his coat stays a length you can manage. Along with the brush use a metal comb- a grayhound comb they are called- it will show you where there are any mats or tangles to brush out. The comb is every bit as important as a brush. If he gets eye boogers wet a cotton ball and take them off with a fine comb, like a flea comb. If you don't remove them they can make sores under his eyes, if you pick them off when they are dry you can tear the skin. Depending on how much hair he has in his ears, some dogs need to have the hair plucked and some don't. There are two sides to the ear plucking thing, I'm somewhere in the middle. You shouldn't pull are the hair so it makes his ears sore but there has to be enough out to be able to keep them wiped out. Get some ear cleaner and wipe them out.
Washing him once a week is probably a little too much, you'll dry out his skin. Stay away from human shampoos and anything by Hartz Mountain. There are lots of good shampoos out there, you might have to try a couple to find one you like. Make sure you check to see if it's concentrated and needs to be diluted. Bio groom used to make a really great herbal shampoo, the tea tree shampoos are good if you like the smell. People seem to think oatmeal shampoos are good for skin problems, but I think they are too drying if you use them all the time.

Hey Spinner, I'm curious as to why to stay away from any shampoos made by Hartz Mountain? I don't use the stuff, but any other Dog Shampoo is SO expensive. When I do wash my dog, I use diluted Baby Shampoo. TIA.

I make Apollo's body wash. Castille soap, a splash of vinegar, some vitamin E, and a few drops of Tea Tree oil.

When he's ready for grooming, I'll take him to Pasofever and she can give him a hair cut and show me what to do with his ears and such for day to day.

Where do you get the Castille Soap & Tea Tree Oil? That sounds interesting, and would like to know how to make it.
