Actually, there is a physical mechanism...locking your knees involves placing your body into a position where gravity is forcing your knees to the limits of the range of motion. It requires nothing for you to maintain this position. It requires action from you (or somebody whacking you in the back of the knees) to move away from this position and unlock your knees.
