Dog not putting pressure on front right paw

Our dog had bad allergies too. Do you feed her a prescription diet? We did, but he started to become allergic to each flavor over time. It was also so expensive. Then we were finally able to find a few pet store brands that worked for him. A lower protein food will help with anxiety

Ugh, food has been an issue since I got her. She will be fine with something and then awhile later she isn't interested in it or it makes her itch. I donate all food she doesn't finish to the shelter. The vet and I think she is allergic to chicken, so right now we are on Open Skies by Canine Caviar and California Naturals, Kangaroo and red lentils. I started to mix the two since she kept going back and forth on wanting them. What brand is your dog on?

We actually had to have him put to sleep this past September.

What food wasn't he on

I wish I could remember the brand that he was on initially. I think royal canin bought that company, but you could only get it from the vet. It was very expensive. We had him on all of them, duck, bison, lamb, rabbit, etc etc. at some point he became allergic to each one. Chicken never worked for him. We then tried just abiut every brand of limited allergy formulas that came out, and we finally found a food at Costco in Texas that was great. It was local and the first ingredient Was salmon and it didnt have fillers. Then we moved here and had to start all over again. After once again trying the newer limited ingredient ones, we had luck with Halo spot's stew

One brand that we initially tried here worked well. It may have been blue buffalo limited ingredient salmon and then they changed the formula and added a bunch of rice and other things. Instant itching. He was certainly allergic to rice and many grains

Edit. Just remembered. It was IVD brand.

my dog also has food allergies. but since shes got urinary crystals she can only be on food that works for that issue. she right now is on royal canin so she doesn't care for the food so i have to mix in chicken with it and she then becomes a happy girl and eats all that i give her.

she also has a issue with licking her front 2 paws i can sit here and she will start chewing on them. the fur on both paws is all red from her saliva i guess shes not limping or any of that. she is also like your dog starr she has issues with being left alone. Every time i leave her she starts barking and crying and does it til i come back. it breaks my heart having to leave her but i do it daily for an hour or 2 as i can't spend my life in my apt. she hasn't started limping or any of that from chewing her paws to no end but i bet that comes one day because she does it daily several times a day

Like I was telling star, there are things that we did that really helped. I was supposed to pm some information to star (sorry I haven't yet), but maybe I'll just put it up here.

We put our dog on clomicalm for 4 or 6 months. Some people leave their dogs on it forever, but we did not. Anyway, Then we did "training" exercises that I found on the net after a lot of research. Basically you're putting them through things that they don't like for short time periods. The drug doesn't make them tired but rather levels them off, in the meantime they gain trust in that you are coming back and not leaving them. Exercise is hugely important for dogs with anxiety. Before leaving for work I took him for a walk. I then filled a kong with some peanut butter and pieces of broken up hard treats. Really jam it in there. Most of the time, most of the destructive behavior and the worst anxiety happens right after you leave. Don't let them hear you grab your car keys or see you put on your coat (or anything that seems to trigger your particular pet) but do give them a pat (after you've given them their hidden treats. At first do practice trials, and even slip in a back door so you can hear/see what they are doing. My dog used to get upset when anything blocked him from getting to us, even amply closing the bathroom door behind you. He would also bark and cry endlessly when we left, and yes he also chewed our furniture

My dog was also a paw licker - part allergy and part nerves

I can post more later

Sorry to hear about your pup :( She also has to be on a grain-free food. I had her on Orijen dog food only to see juniper berries and her allergy report said she was allergic to Juniper. If this food I have doesn't work, I may check into the Royal Canin, thanks! Blue Buffalo wouldn't work, they had a rep in Petco and I told him Holly's allergies, he looked through everything and said his brand couldn't help me.

Maybe when you are at the vet ask for Dermacool. I just got it, so I'm not sure how well it will work. I've tried putting bitter apple on her paws, but it didn't stop her one bit from licking and chewing them. What I can't stand is that bacteria smell that comes along with the constant licking, her paws stink! I leave my dog home during the week while I'm at work and she seems okay with that, though she does watch me from the window as I drive off and she's there waiting when I come home. I feel leaving her has helped her some, as she knows I always come home.

I never heard of clomicalm, but my worry is that she is on allergy shots and I don't want to give her even more meds. I guess I will ask the vet about it at her next appt., thanks! I did try Comfort Zone, the thing you plug in the wall with hormones in it... didn't work at all, in fact, it seemed to have the opposite affect. I do give her a treat or kong every morning during the week only and she gets so excited about it, she won't let me forget to give it to her either. So maybe that's part of the reason she's not as bad when I leave for work. During the weekends, if I put my jacket and shoes on, she barks and follows me, but I don't let this stop me from leaving anymore. When I come home nothing is destroyed and she is fine again, but we have been in a routine for 4 years now. The 1st year wasn't so good, she bit and destroyed her crate, went potty on the floor, chewed things and would scratch the door all up. She is a lot better now besides the main issue that she can't be alone at other peoples houses or even stay at other peoples houses while people are home without anxiety.

I would suggest that you talk to the folks at Peppers Pet Pantry about your pups food needs.
They have been a lifesaver for my pup and his food allergies. They are super helpful and have free samples of the food, so you don't end up with bags of food that your dog won't eat.

They are in Solomon's (Calvert) and Callaway (St Mary's).

Good luck.

My Grand Dog is on Allergy Injections every 10 days. He's allergic to Rice, Wheat, Corn, and something else that I can't think of. His Vet recommended Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato. He was chewing his paws until they were almost bloody. His skin looked like it was scalded at times. Poor thing!

Thanks! I'll look into the Natural Balance next time I get food. I have been to Pepper's Pet Pantry next to All Kinds :)

Sounds like I've worked most of it out then. I think they mellow as they get older too. Clomicalm helps with the paw chewing and licking too, and I doubt it would interfere with the other medication.
CLOMICALM® for Dogs Home - Novartis Animal Health US, Inc.

One thing I do regret though, is not trying to kennel him sooner. We ended u p moving and had to kennel him for a week. I felt bad that he wasn't transitioned into it, but it really was a relief to know that we didn't have to worry anymore about going out of town or whether and when we could. As far as transitioning, they recommend taking them just to the parking lot of the kennel and walking them around a few times. Then one day you can leave them there for part of a day, etc etc.

My dog (Shepherd/Chow mix) was outside playing in the snow we had Friday and Saturday. Well this morning I noticed when I put her food out that she was lifting her right paw as she was eating. Then all of a sudden she just plopped down and stayed laying down by her food bowl. I called her over to me and she would use her right leg but wouldn't put too much pressure on it. She does walk around, but again she won't put full pressure on the right leg/paw. I tried to check it out and her right leg would just shake as I held it. I spread apart her two middle nails, to look into the paw and she gave out a loud yelp (she almost never yelps). So I let it be and went back later to look. I really can't see anything or swelling. She has bad allergies where she constantly licks her paws (she is on allergy shots and special food), but her paws don't look overly red or even like anything is wrong. When I was trying to look at her paw, she would lick the area and my hand. Any ideas of what could be wrong? The regular vets are closed today, can it wait until tomorrow? I guess I'm overly worried because this dog never cries out in pain.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

So the vet was wrong in their previous diagnosis, she did not injure her paw like they thought. The not putting pressure on her paw would happen off and on after this event for almost a year, finally they did a blood test and found she had Canine Ehrlichosis. This causes an arthritis type pain and dogs get this illness from the lone star tick. I just wanted to let everyone know in case they have seen the same issue in their animals.

Glad they figured it out. I posted earlier that ours would limp every so often. They ended up doing a blood test and before the test was even finished it showed he had Lymes. Vet thinks he had it for a while. He did a round of antibiotics and there was some improvement. Unfortunately, he had to be put down last summer. He developed a kidney condition and a large blot clot in the vena cava. There wasn't anything that could be done. I thought I read somewhere that Lyme's could cause kidney issues, but who knows. Hopefully your furbaby is doing much better!

Beta- They treated her but she will still hold that paw up from time to time.

getbent- sorry about your doggie :( It seems the tick illnesses are getting worse and even with the k9 advantix and Trifexis, she will get 1-2 ticks on her every year.
