They keep popping up every where in Southern Maryland its insanity. I personally haven't been to a dollar store/general/tree whatever in god maybe 10 years. Who is shopping at them? Do they do most of their shopping consistently there? Do we really need two dollar store options in Leonardtown

Thats how them b*tch's R
I do occasionally stop at the Dollar General in Leonardtown or the one on Rt.5 by Wawa. Those two are nicer than the Family Dollar in L'town. That place is a disaster. Not sure they can cram anything else in there.

I buy plastic table cloths for parties there. I have also stopped to buy some chips/cookies/soda/cups for small parties as well. Other than that? Nope, don't really go into them.

Almost never. While I'm a huge fan of Goodwill because I love a deal*, I'm not big on cheap junk, which is what those dollar stores are mostly filled with. But obviously they are very popular because there are a ton of them not just in SoMD, but pretty much everywhere we've been so far in our travels.

* Here in Belton I found two pairs of black heels - a Vera Wang and a Nine West - for $7 each. :cartwheel I needed a pair to wear with my reunion dress ($6, Goodwill) and couldn't decide between them, so I bought them both. Love me some Goodwill!

Are prices for those things cheaper than typical grocery stores? Because the last time I went into a dollar store things weren't just a dollar it seemed they were in line price wise w/ food lion or walmart.

Funny you bring this up, I may go into a Dollar store once in a blue moon, however, yesterday I ran out of window cleaner while cleaning my car. I jumped into hubbys car and drove to the one in Ltown. I was shocked to see how much stuff they carry in those stores. Anyway, I got my window cleaner, some mouthwash and toothpaste. It was about $ 2.00 cheaper than the grocery store. May start going in there for laundry detergent, fabric softener, trash bags, etc. Its closer than target and less traffic.

Dollar General is NOT a dollar store, as you'll see that not everything there is a dollar. Dollar Tree IS. They have completely different inventory. Oh and Family Dollar is NOT a dollar store either. So yes, they are needed. I, for one, shop at Dollar General on a fairly regular basis. I find great deals on household goods there. :yay:

P.S. I am fairly certain that you've started a thread or made comments about this before. I remember that you were anti-Dollar General then too.

$2 each item or total purchase price? I usually get stuff like that (laundry detergent, trash bags, paper products, cleaners, shampoo, etc...) at Costco. Not only because I use a lot of those in our household but they are always cheaper than walmart/target.

I knew there was a difference but wasn't sure exactly what it was

The Dollar Store Wars: A story more fascinating than the Star Wars.

A couple of years ago in a galaxy you've probably visited a few times...

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar (the #3 and #2 chains in the dollar store galaxy) decided to merge. The merger would hopefully give them the scale needed to do battle with their bigger dollar store cousin, Dollar General (the #1 chain in the dollar store galaxy). But Dollar General got wind of the impending alliance and said... F that! We're gonna buy Family Dollar ourselves, that will move us closer to taking over the entire dollar store galaxy. Muhaha!

No, no, no said the Federal Trade Commission - long the guardians of fairness and consumer benefiting competition throughout the Universe. If you are to acquire Family Dollar yourself, you will have to sell 4,000 of your (20,000 or so) combined dollar stores.

Never said Dollar General. Be warned you dastardly Federal Trade Commission: You may have succeeded this time in blocking our plans, but you will not dissuade us from our ultimate goal of conquering the dollar store galaxy!

And so Dollar Tree and Family Dollar consummated their union, giving them a combined power just greater than that of their rival Dollar General.

But... undeterred... Dollar General begin opening new dollar stores at a remarkable pace in hopes of reestablishing its dominance and one day having the power to crush all who dare to stand in its way...

They're the new 7-11..

Ours in Ridge has a tiny convenience store in it.. Other than Milk you will not find any perishable items though.. NO fruit or veggies. Not too much junk, maybe an aisle or two worth but the rest of the store has a good variety.

Dog Food, Snacks, soup and stuff.. LOTS of soda.. ice cream, chips..

No produce, but they do have a fairly decent selection of canned goods though. I love the staff at that store.

You know that I coupon, so having local DGs is a necessity for me. They are GREAT for couponers.

I love the Ridge Dollar General. It saves me trip into town when I only need a few items. No fresh produce or meat selection (other than breakfast sausage and some lunch meats), but over the counter medicines, cleaning supplies, canned and refrigerated items and so on. I actually shop there now for most vitamins, soaps, shampoos and canned goods. Not to mention the name brand toilet paper cheaper than going to BJs for the same size pack.

You will save. I've been getting cleaning supplies, toothpaste, paper products, etc. there for years.

Used to frequent a dollar store that I could swear was a money laundering front. Around 2001 to 2003 and you could buy CFLs, energy drinks, Beta Fish in a glass bowl, dishes/silverware sets, greeting cards, fabric flowers, every imaginable AV connector or cable (HDMI, RCA, S-Video, Toslink, etc.), as well as a ton of ethnic foods from SEA, laser pointers, kids toys (squirt guns/yo-yos), etc.

They had some of the super cheap stuff you see in the dollar stores around today, but I would say easily half the store or more should have been in the $3-$5 range, and some stuff a lot more. Hell, they had TDK minidisc 2 packs for $1 and boxes of CDRs (10 or 15 pack maybe).
