My 19 yr old has to do the same

They didn't have driver's ed in the school system when I took it. I went to Catalina and my parents paid out the ass for it.

It applies to all public, private and home-schooled kids.
How does that work?
I really doubt driving is a necessity when you're 16. Now, 18, maybe, when you're out of the house and on your own - at which point, you don't have to pay to take the course anymore. Problem solved. From 16-18, driving is a priviledge. Whether it's a right or necessity AFTER that - well, at that point, you don't have to pay anymore!
I was so informed today that in Calvert Co parents have to fork over 300$ for their kids driver ED class. Is this true and if so what are the consequences if a family cannot afford this fee and is this a state policy?
It's the new world of today. I learned to drive working on a farm, I read the book and went to DMV for a written and driving test on the road. I passed the tests and it didn't cost me a dime. Of course that was over 45 years ago. Being a tax payer of N.J. when I finally got a car I ran it through a state inspection station yearly "at no cost". Can't do none of that in this day and age because our politicians have decided that we have to pay, pay, pay and pay some more for anything and everything. There is an old guy in my hometown that suggests government be run on a paper bag economy. Collect all the income and put it in the bag. When you spend money it comes out of the bag. When the bag is empty you stop spending it. Sounds like a good idea to me.
I loved taking driver's ed when they offered it in school. Although the movies they showed were from the 60's.
It was free then.
I too had my class for free in Virginia. So its not so much the 300$ (yes I can afford it) but rather why is the state hitting families in the wallet with a mandatory class while other states get along fine without charging.
They must have changed the law in the last 8 years. It used to be if you didn't take the class you/ your parents would end up paying more for insurance. And they didn't offer the class in the schools. Are they offering the class in school now or do you still have to go with one of the local driving schools? It's not just Calvert....it's everywhere in the state....It's required in order to get a license
If the parents/kid can't afford it....the kid can't take the class and he doesn't get his license

Its not like were paying enough already to the state which might includes some "perks" to live here ounce in awhile. NOT! In this state I guess were so use to putting out personal cash to support state and local services that we never question it and that its simply the Maryland way of life. Sorry guys for not having lived in MD long enough to be endoctrinated. Or maybe I'm just stubborn.
My youngest graduated in 01 and it was offered at Calvert then. But it was before/after school and there was a fee.
When did he pass away?
