driving in southern maryland

Common sense ain't common
Holy crap... People in SoMD drive stoopid?! :faint: I NEVER KNEW!!!

 jk. Hun, try the beltway everyday. You'll welcome Rt. 4, Rt. 5, 301 and 235 with open arms.

P.S. - Its raining in Bethesda.

Oh geez, no doubt. Took us FOREVER it felt like to get from the Newseum in DC back to school this afternoon (chaperoning youngest son's field trip) Didn't help that it was 1) roughly 3pm so EVERYONE is leaving at once and 2) we passed two fender benders and had to deal with a bunch of idiot looky-loos.

Speaking of driving....

1. Go to Google maps.
2. Go to "Get Directions."
3. Type "Japan" as the start location.
4. Type "China" as the end location.
5. Read direction #43

Did your boy tell you about that? Thing2 told me about it yesterday.

I wonder if #43 is the same as #42 if you choose China as the start and Japan as the end?

(I'm not sure I want to travel that route -- can I do the directions to avoid major water routes?)

Every car in SoMD has bald tires and crappy windshield wipers, nobody has figured out how to turn on a defroster (front or rear) and their headlights do not work during the day.

Just accept it and your rainy day drives will be a little easier :huggy:

I just got new tires in February, replaced a cracked headlight last month and Im getting new wiper blades on Saturday, thank you!

But the tires I had before these were bald. And dryrotting.

Yup. I feel your pain. Yesterday morning around 5:30-ish they announced a car which had flipped over on the beltway and burst into flames. I just thought to myself "Its too early for this crap..."

ok, so, this might make some people mad. im soooooooo tired of the way people drive here. i have been all over the country and i have to say the way the people drive here drives me crazy. what is it about a two lane highway in southern maryland, that people think they have to drive side by side and slow as hell????????? can you not pass the car on the left then move over???? or when going over the solomons bridge, you know that stretch of road that is only one lane, theres always that one car that wont go faster than 40 mph!!!!! WTF???? if you are going to hold up 100 cars behind you during heavy traffic hours, pull off the road!!! have a little courtesy for other drivers and get out of the way!!!!!!!!!!!!

not everyone here all rich and such and can afford those fast cars with the big motors that can do over 50mph.

I blame it on the car on the left for not slowing down to let me in. (couldnt afford the brake option either)

You wanna move to the country? dont complain about the sweet smell of the fertilizer.

I had a nice drive home. Then ran out again for something and no problems.

me too.
I get in the fast lane on the beltway and set the ol' cruise control at 36mph.
I never have to slow down for traffic.

Picked up the beltway at 5.. heading towards Arlington.. and sure enough schoot over the left lane, and some old guy doing the speed limit in the left lane.. running alongside the other three lanes of traffic.

The 395 tunnel last night was the worst. People doing 35 MPH 3 wide (speed limit is 45 there so figure 70 would be the norm). BG was behind me following me out of town, and I lost her because nobody would get the hell out of her way.

Don't they know these roads were made back in the 60's when they were designed to SAFELY do 75, and that was with the cars made in the 60's, with current car inflation rates it would be safe to do about 125 now..

I don't care if you want to do 10 MPH below the speed limit, but have the courtesy to move your slow old ass over.

what was the load on the roads back in the 60s compared to today?
look at it that way, and what used to be safe at 75 is now not safe at 50

Just the opposite.

If there is MORE traffic, to keep it running as smoothly as it did back in the 60's with LESS traffice you'd have to increase the speed, not slow it down, and EVERYone needs to speed up, not just the hammer lanes.

Safety is in fluidity.. smooth motion, not stops and starts, or accordion like movement. Studies have shown one care moving 10 MPH slower than average can result in massive backups in traffic load like those found on the beltway, causing not only lost comuting time, more dangerous situations, but a HUGE waste of fuel, and HUGE increase in pollution.

Secret to success, safer roads, and a better, cleaner envrionment for our children (that always works.. we have to go faster for the CHILDREN!).. a MINIMUM speed limit. If you don't feel safe doing 85 MPH, stay off of the beltway and find a different way to get where you are going!
