Duckpin Bowling

Those were the days, Saturdays as a young boy, bowling duckpin at the Marlow Heights Fairlanes for the Silver Hill Boys Club, proably for at least a dozen years. Remember those days Wineo Im sure you spent a Saturday or two with your big brothers up there while they bowled. Never ever became fond of ten pins, duckpin was so much more of a challenge.
Wineo Im sure you remember Billy Watson, he was one of the top ranked duckpin bowlers on the East Coast.

Mom was a coach for Silver Hill for years. Just got an e-mail last month from Pee Wee, Billy's younger brother. We all bowled. I received a trophy for High Handicap Game and it took me years to realize I got a trophy for being the worst bowler:buddies: Guess they didn't want to leave me out. My sister contiuned to bowl after we moved here, but changed to 10 pin. My older brother was right up there with Billy.

Those where the days:popcorn:

I remember the name, way back in the days the 'Washington Daily News' (rip) use to have big articles in the sports pages about duckpin bowling and have the rankings and what took place in league play. Did Jeff Pyles bowl from the Hyattsville area, or was he one of the Camp Springs Pyles?

Hyattsville, I'd say..his mom managed the PG Plaza Fairlanes. He was probably THE best male duckpin bowler ANYWHERE. He holds tons of records.

PeeWee was Billy's son, your thinking of Johnny who was also a son of Billy, who was the one who hung around with your brothers.:buddies:

Wasn't there a Steve as well? Remember any of the Campbells? I always wondered what happened to Patrick Campbell he was the youngest. It seems like they all were in and out of our house at times. Billy and Doris Watson, they lived down the hill from us near Oxon Run Park. My mom has some SHBC stuff I can send to Chuck and put on the website, even some Pepperment Pipers stuff.:killingme

I don't know that I'd even want to walk up there. You might end up falling through the floor. That place is OLD!!

Gosh I miss that place :buddies:

talked to Dickie over the summer and someone had asked him about renting out the top floor for a resturant, and turned them down. Said he uses it for storage and wouldn't know what to do with all the "stuff" up there.

I sure miss Dukes too, those where great times spent in there:buddies:

I need to go in and check out the place. I haven't been in there since they closed Dukes. I moved to Calvert and don't come over the bridge much anymore. Do you know what Pop Duke is doing these days? I haven't seen him in ages. I miss all the people who used to hang in there. Sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock and do it all again.

Yes there was a Stevie. I remember once when I was at the Watson's, Mr Watson showed me all his bowling trophies and things he had won over the years, being a young kid at I was really impressed.

That goes way back, not sure if Jeff ever bowled in the News tourney. Used to follow it, some of the guys that bowled in that are still active..Shorty Divver, for one..possibly Lindsey Hammonds. The Daily News sponsored a 30 game tourney(if I remember right) for the city championship. No other papers followed duckpins after the News died. Henry Fankhauser had a weekly column in the County News(PG) for awhile, but that ended in the 80s, I believe.

Pyles still holds the set record of 655(235,185, 235). Set at Glenmont Lanes(defunct) in 77 or 78...plus a ton of other records..Think there's only been one other person to crack 600 for a set.

My hubby is a duckpin fan...grew up at Suitland with his mother, brothers, friends and all duckpin bowling in teams. He still misses it and thinks it will eventually return.

I think he held a record at one time.

Anyone from early to late 70s early 80s..Suitland area alleys

By far the worst duckpin lanes in the USA..

Sure was!

I bowled there as a youngster myself, but in the duckpin alley league.

I see Pop all the time as he reads alot (I own the used book store that used to be Duke's Bar). Regarding the floor upstairs, it is old, but it is solid as a rock. There is a lot of stuff stored up there, and the duckpin alley is still there.

I'd love to see what kinda shape it's in..I used to bowl all over, some really OLD houses..Ball returns made out of cane, houses that share the house with candlepin lanes...etc..
