Education Best Form of Reparation, Says Black Scholar

"I am not interested in getting 50 dollars in my pocket," a black scholar protested. What he does earnestly desire is for an American president to stand up and say "we were wrong" for 250 years of slavery in the U.S.

call me ignorant but what does an apology have to do with education?
He goes on to say that freed slaves started out with zero dollars or got into debt to start over and that its led to their decendents being underprivlaged to this day .....ummmm........ I guess none of the "white" indentured servants, none of the chinese/asian slaves, I guess none of those that just came over to this country with nothing but what was on their backs...I guess we're all underprivlaged to this day because of those bastages.
I don't know maybe I'm ignorant on some of this and no I don't believe in any type of slavery, and yes our ancestors were wrong, but life isn't fair-for anyone. Am I reading into this wrong?

Education is also the best way to get out of the hood. Why don't you tell some of the thugs to start respecting it and get somewhere?

Bunch suspects the reason why an American president has not apologized over slavery is that the next step would naturally be reparation.
I'd feel somewhat hypocritical apologizing for the actions of someone that's been dead for 100 years.

We already provide reperations to the people he speaks of as being supposedly held in poverty by what happened back then... we call it welfare.

You know what else? Most of the white people back then were poor as schnit immigrants, too. I guess all those folks who hopped on wagons to go west were just loaded with money...

Just them working the "you owe me" mentality they have cultivated. They will keep up the pressure and eventually get what they want. It is the American way. 30 years ago the idea of guys blowing each other was universally repugnant, except of course to the blower and blowee, then the lobby started the push to gain acceptance of that lifestyle and now if you are gay, low level liberal politicians can't perform illegal marriages for you fast enough, Hollywood can't push you onto TV fast enough, and you cannot be too flamboyant. Constant steady pressure.

What seems to have escaped them is that free education is available to every American already. All through school I sat next to Leotis Berry and Dezzi Hannah, both black, both in the same public school system as me and other Caucasians. Leotis went into the Navy, got out and last I heard was working for NSA. Dezzi hung out around town, did odd jobs and was eventually shot in a dope deal gone bad.

It is not about race, or reparations, it is about pizz poor personal decisions, lack of personal responsibility, moral laziness, and an addiction to the government and societal teet that is keeping the black man down.

White southerners were stripped of everything following the War of Northern Agression. They were forced to work for slave wages and had to live under an almost tyrannical rule of Northern political appointees who were designated to oversee the "Reconstruction". The implications of the policies in the late 19th century in the Deep South can still be felt today. I don't hear the ancestors of these white Southerners asking for reparations from the Federal government. Personally, I think the President should acknowledge America's history of enslavement and condemn as a black stain on the fabric of our early society. That being said, I don't believe one plug nickel should go to ANY African-American for what happened to their ancestors. Blacks, as well as whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc., have the ability to thrive in today's society. There is racism in America to this day, and there always will be. However, racism is a two way highway with many lanes. I've been the subject of racism, and I'm sure most of the white people on this board can site examples of being the victims of prejudice. Granted, you are more likely to be discriminated against if you are a minority, but in some areas whites ARE the minority (the DC metro area certainly seems to fit that description). People, get some pride and quit holding your palm out wanting a hand out.

The false hope of education...

Horace Mann was instrumental in the creation of publicly funded education and his argument before the Mass. Assembly was brilliant.
*Can any people who are soundly educated be kept in continued poverty? NO!
*Who will take advantage of the resources they find around them and work for the betterment of their kin and country...but the educated!

The one element that is missing from his plea? Morality. He never suspected that morality would be pulled from the public education system and thus they have to have "Character" training. And huge resources to build up self esteem.

If you have educated people, without morals, who don't care for their fellow man: Their education is pointless and perhaps dangerous.

It's about closing your yap complaining 'bout "You owe me because my people were brought here against their will." and putting on the opportunities this nation has given you. The dissolution of the slave trade and dismemberment of the plantations, the emancipation and uplifting of the former slaves, the Head Start and free-breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and after care programs in the schools, the set-aside scholarships and preferential admissions to institutions of higher education are reparations enough. This is a land of opportunity, not outcomes. If you cannot take advantage of the opportunities given you, STFU and learn to dig ditches.

No, you are OK. It does get old hearing about how it's all our fault and we owe them an apology. First, my Irish ancestors didn't get here till late 1880s and struggled for years themselves. How they they succeed? They weren't treated very well when they got here but they got by. It really does get old. Most black people I hang around are pretty cool and are fine people but I get so tired of hearing of these stupid stories about apoligizing for slavery or any other time they want to play the race card. Oh, by the way I don't want to be called white anymore. I want to be called Irish-American.

I would like to say that I have never spoken to a black person who is in favor of reparations for slavery. Most of them I ask either laugh or look at me like I'm nutty.

The only thing I can assume is these Congressmen are pandering to the white-guilt liberals, who are nothing more than patronizing racists.

Except for Fred, who said, "BWA-hahahahahaha! Wait...how much money are we talking?"

I've had plenty of black people say we owe them for this - these are mostly young blacks who are influenced by BET/MTV/Spike Lee/Sharpton/Jackson.
