What's the deal? I keep seeing these stories where grocery stores are limiting to 1 carton per person, and egg surcharges, etc etc, but I'm not seeing that here. Sams Club had a whole wall full of eggs, and Publix was full up, as well as Walmart.

Are you guys having an egg shortage?

I wouldn't say a shortage, but some stores are limiting. Probably has more to do with the supply chain used and the egg source. The price is still skyrocketing tho. A doz large brown generic eggs that was $2 not too long ago is $10 in Giant now.

I just got a 24 pack of cage-free eggs at Sams for $5. When they have pasture raised eggs they're $5 for 18pk. Publix has boutique pasture raised eggs $10 for a dozen but that's outrageous and Publix smokes drugs. The only time I ever shop there is when they have good stuff on the BOGO, and even then sometimes the exact same thing at Walmart is still cheaper.

Does Publix have one of those sample tables for that?

Yeah, the eggs are running about $.50 apiece at the store right now. And that’s for the regular non-organic, caged birds that eat leftover movie theater, popcorn and stale bread.

For some strange reason temporary price increases seldom are.
Perishable goods tend to temper that behavior somewhat.

Stores don’t like to get stuck with things that will end up going in the trash heap.

So $6/doz. I'm going to the store today and I'll look what regular eggs are going for.

A friend that raises free range chickens sold me three dozen for $5 each carton. She feeds high quality food and the eggs are much better than from the grocery store.
She also raises goats and makes awesome soaps, lotions and shampoos. She and I share a booth at the Chesapeake Marketplace.

I bought an 18 count carton of Egglands Best large for $6.49 at Giant last week. Store brand 12 count was $8.

Can you really tell the difference between her eggs and anyone elses?
I don't mean to knock your post, but to tell the truth --to me an egg is an egg.
They all taste the same to me.

I heard an unconfirmed rumor that the previous administration was paying big $ to large suppliers to destroy their flocks.

Avian Flu is the excuse of course.

I refuse to buy regular white eggs in the grocery store. I would rather do without. If you've had fresh eggs, there is no comparison.

Yes. When you crack them open side by side you can really see the difference. Pasture raised and free range have deeper yellow yolks and thicker whites, and they're marginally more nutritious. Aesthetic appeal aside, the deal sealer for me is how the chickens are raised. I'm not a big fan of animal cruelty and avoid participating when possible.
