Electric fences....

Good or bad? Anyone have experiences with them?

Generally, I don't like the "shock" or "correction" as it's called for dog training. But, as I've posted before, Abbey is very stubborn about staying in her yard. We spend big $$ to fence 2 acres of our land and she would just sail over the fence. Ott and I installed (ourselves) the invisible fencing along the entire fence line and she did well for a while. Then, she started jumping and taking a "hit." I refused to raise the shock level over anything other than mid-range. We made a few changes to the physical fence and she still wears the collar but we haven't had any escapes in a long time.

I wouldn't trust the invisible fence alone. Dogs will go through it.

I wouldn't consider one. Sure, maybe your dog can't get out, but that doesn't keep other dogs from coming in your yard and provoking your dog.

Exactly. The ONLY reason we put one in is because we had tried everything. I was hysterical every time Abbey would get out because she would run with the dog next door (who is not restricted) and we live on a very rural road but the cars fly.

My dogs are NEVER left in the yard without someone being home, but it only takes a split second of her leaving the yard and getting in the road. I still constantly check on them.

:yeahthat:

The collar didn't even phase my older dog at all....she went right thru the "fence line"

a couple of weeks after we installed it the great people at SMECO came down to the house to re-connect the electric line that one of their contractors cut and they had issues getting out of the driveway....needless to say I'm still waiting for the check from them for taring up the "fence line" when they did a burn out by my driveway(I think the check will be in the mail today :lmao:)

I tried one, assuming you are talking about the "invisible" fence. After the training my dog would just sit right in the middle of the yard, afraid to move. Until a cat ran by, when she'd take of after it and then not be able to come back in the yard. Worked on my boy though. :lmao:

Look my ass glows!
I once had a Weimaraner who was sooo smart she figured out by getting in the bed of the truck, she could jump over the "invisible" fence and be outta there. I ended up putting up a 3000 sq. ft compound for her.

My cousin dared me to pee on one when I was about 12.
That was an experience. :yikes:
Interesting, I convinced my cousin that it would be cool to try. I nearly peed my pants laughing while he was punching me. :lmao:

Well that explains a good bit.

But I'm thinking she is really asking about an invisble fence rather than the electric type of fencing that is used for horses, etc.

What would you do if your beloved goldie was jumping? Just curious because I'm not an advocate of the invisible fence.
I think you all did the right thing.
