Emergency! External Hard Drive Help

To all involved:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate any and all help you are giving me. Our address book is on the hard drive, so our Christmas cards are in a holding pattern.

Guys, sorry, I didn't have anything that even closely matches.

The idea of hitting SmartCo might work. I'll ping someone and see if there is anything there.....

The key is going to be Protege... we had a LOAD of Western Digital Caviar drives with the same controller board form factor and tried it to no avail. The drive spun up but the head mechanism clicked over and over... so Caviar series (30 - 40GB size) with the same controller board is a no go.

I have some feelers out around and sent a PM to UNIX_PIRATE to see...

Right. I had Caviar as well, but I knew they wouldn't work. I PM'd Jeff, he does some work at SmartCo, thought maybe he could find the right drive. He's probably sleeping right now...

I just got your phone message from Sunday.

Any changes?

My boss tried it in our recovery machine and it would not recognize it at the firmware level, so that tells us the board is gone.

I am waiting on one guy to check his stash at work, but it is not looking good...

I have not heard from UNIX_PIRATE...

It might be worth purchasing a drive and see what the board does, they are like $55...

Here is a place but it shows as being discontinued - but they might have one in stock

I will call you tomorrow and we can figure out the next step.

SMARTCO has a drive there waiting for me. Now I am waiting to see if they will have anyone there tonight. Should get home about 5:00, depending on bus being on time (or even close to it).

When I go to get it, is there anything I should check to make sure it is what I need?

I would print out the pics and take them w/ you, just to make sure the controller board looks to be the same, but I am confident it should be if it is a WD Protege - in the 40GB range.

We have Court of Honor tonight, boy gets 1st Class... I can get the drive from you later tonight around/after 9pm or sometime Friday - or bring the whole mess back to you and you/we can swap the controller card (or we can do it when I give it back) and you can take it home and try... we can figure it out.

Call me when you get a chance and we will go from there.

Congratulation to your boy. 1st class was the toughest for me. They required Morse code> Do they still. That was my bugaboo. After I got through 1st Class I virtually leaped to Eagle.

No. They change things from time to time, for example:

Was this one of the requirements for you?

Describe the three things you should avoid doing related to use of the Internet. Describe a cyberbully and how you should respond to one.

WAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! We tried 2 different boards. Neither worked. The protege board in the replacement drive was busted too. Gonna check with smartco to see if they have any more protege drives.

Thanks! No Morse Code required!

He is in 6th grade... he is saying he wants to be Eagle before he exits Middle School - which is possible.

We are very blessed to have a kid like him!

Man - I felt like the wind came out of my sails the other night when that happened... but I did not have a whole heck of a lot of faith in the Protege when I saw "BAD" written across the label...

Look at the bright side - you can change a controller board now :lmao:

I know Unix_Pirate is checking - but he might e-mail you directly.

Let us know how this progresses - we are all waiting

I'm going to go down to SMARTCO in January and go thru their boxes of drives and if I can't find one there, I'll buy one (or more) off eBay.
