Oh - and in addition to everything else about PetPlan, they were incredibly thoughtful regarding the only other pet I've had on their plan. I only called them to end the services for him after his death. A few days later a card came in the mail with the sweetest sentiments, and a package of Forget Me Not seeds. I choked back tears.

We had a doxie who, when we got home from work, was having trouble breathing. He was my husband's best friend. We lived 5 minutes away from Tidewater Vet. It was 4:45pm when we called them. They said they would not see him and we had to take him to Waldorf--jerks. We loaded him in the car and as we passed Tidewater, they were still open with clients. We made it to Waldorf and the staff met us at the door and took Mayer back immediately for treatment. Did not discuss money or anything (maybe seeing a grown man crying had something to do with it). After a long 15 min the vet on duty came out and got us to show us the X-rays that were done. Before he could say anything I said "Oh my God, he is full of cancer! By then Mayer was in an oxygen environment and with medication doing better. Hubby and I went over all options with the vet. After spending time with Mayer (30 min or so) we made the decision to have him put down. It was apparent from the X-rays that no matter what was done it would have only prolonged the inevitable and he would be in extreme pain most of the time. After our goodbye's, we went outside to wait. Still, they never asked for a dime from us. I had never seen my husband so upset. He was even sobbing right along with me. After about 20 minutes, the vet came out, carrying a brown cardboard coffin with our beloved Mayer in it. I asked what the bill was and he replied with tears in his (and his staff's) eyes---"NO CHARGE--take him home." Two days later, we received a condolence card---Hallmark at that---from the staff. Maybe things have changed in 3 years there, but I would definitely use them again. Gotta stop now---missing Mayer too much. He was 12.

I had to put a family pet down on a Sunday who was really suffering. The Ba****s at waldorf wanted full payment before putting my pet down. Nearly 200 dollars for a for a measly injection. I'm sorry, but I have plenty of experiences with that place and find your story hard to believe it was that glamorous of customer service

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy. I can only speak for the service I have received the one time we were there. Reading the posts here today, I doubt I would get the same service now. In past experiences with other vets in other states, we were never charged for putting a pet down, but I guess times have changed. Again, sorry for your loss.

How come they had him so long? Glad he's feeling better.
I wonder the same thing? Im sure they did the same thing the ER would have done.... just lest expensive because its not an ER hospital!

They had to sedate him, clean it, suture it, he had to come out of anesthesia, they had to make sure he was fine, and get his paper work together .... all while dealing with other patient that were SCHEDULED that day also.

MASH and Annapolis was open also... and they require full payment as well prior to a euthanasia. The reason they do it this way is so you dont have to stop at the desk in front of everyone when you are so upset.

Since you have had plenty of bad experiences with that place why do you continue to go back. It is your choice to go there, you have options now... so go to MASH or Annapolis.

I got him in at 1200 and yes they were working him in between other patients and scheduled surgeries. After waiting and then seeing the doc I guess I got out of there about 1 or so. They told me to call back at 5 to check on him and at 6 he was ready to come home.

He did really well and was eating and drinking last night. And his eyes look so much clearer so I know he is feeling so much better. Now comes trying to get 6 pills a day down his throat and trying to get him to leave the bandage alone!

The cut was down to the bone but didn't break it......doc said it looked like it went between the knuckle.

If you can break up the pill put it in the food bowl or you could wrap it in cheese or a soft treat to hide it.

if you have help hold his mouth open and have someone drop it down his throat.

put a flavor on the bandage that he doesnt like maybe hot pepper or something he may stop licking!!

good luck

you can probably pick up something at the pet store, I think it's called bitter orange that tastes yucky for the bandage

So if your regular vet had him there for 5 hours, it makes sense that the emergency vet wanted to keep him overnight, right? I mean, it wouldn't make much sense for you to wait there for 5 hours for him when you could be home sleeping and could pick him up the next morning. I'm sure the emergency vet had other animals also.

MASH in Huntingtown are very good. They do surgeries during the day and are also opened all night long for emergencies. I had to take my Buddy Boy to them at 2am one night for a ruptured disk in his spine. He was in too much pain that night and they were so good with him. Also my old Sadie dog at knee surgery there years ago. They were wonderful.

Nice to know this now
Just a little late for backagain and her pup But we all know this for next time.

Well his vet said there was no reason for him to be kept overnight for stitches and the reason he was kept at his vet for 5 hours was because he was being worked in between other surgeries. And the additional tests that Waldorf wanted to do were unnecessary. His vet said they were CYA tests.

I was the only one in Waldorf. At least the only one in the front area.

Next time I will go to Annapolis.

And I should add....they did not demand payment at all! They rushed my dog back for immediate treatment and then I had a choice to make payments or pay in full. I paid in full because it was only a couple hundred bucks, which is nothing to have my baby treated.

I kept trying to call them the other night and the only number that I found kept going into an answering machine. Would you happen to have the correct emergency number?
TIA!

Well he will take the meds as long as it is in a treat or food, the bandage is going to be the main issue. Thanks for the suggestion!

no problem. My MIL's dog licks her front paws every now and then she will put ground cyanne (sp?) pepper on them and the dog stops licking
