I think that their standard response to keep the animal overnight for $400 for "observation".
We had to take Bandit after over 2 hours in a cluster seizure, arriving there at 11 PM probably a few months ago. Of course, as soon as we arrived he came out of the seizure. They wanted to hook him up to a catheter (sp?), which confused me because he had peed in between seizures and, of course, to keep him overnight. We asked how much it would cost, which they stated a min. of $400. We refused, let them give him a phenobarb shot (he had thrown up a pill that I had given him) and $120 later took him home. I just couldn't believe walking in the door costs $80.

I spoke with Dr. Fox Friday who said he will get back with me early next week. Here is what happened. I had a ##### who recently whelped a litter of 4 pups. She had a difficult delivery that took us to the emergency vet at midnight. She delivered the 1st pup at home, but then the second pup was coming and she broke the sac, but the baby was in the nirth canal and wouldn't come out. After some time (20 min)of not being able to push the baby out, we rushed her to the emergency vet. It took us an hour to get there (we live in the 7th District). I asked them to do a c-section (chihuahua) and spay her. The vet refused. He gave 3 doses of oxytocin and delivered the 2nd puppy after 3 hours of labor from the delivery of the 1st puppy. The third pup came 90 minutes later and they gave her dextrose since she was so tired via IV catheter. The 4th pup came about 10 minutes later. The vet did blood work when we first got there and told me everything was fine. He sent us home with mom and 4 pups. I asked for antibiotics but he refused saying mom and babies were just fine. That evening, the babies seemed ok but mom looked very tired and overall just not right to me. By the next morning, I noticed that 2 of the pups had faded and were past the point of revival (I tried everything). I lost both of the faded pups and rushed mom and the remaining pups to All Kinds. That is when I found out that the emergency vet's office sent them copies of the blood work and the WBC and Neutrophil levels were very high. She was 102.9 temp, muddy gums and overall feeling lousy in a matter of a few hours. I am very very lucky that I didn't lose the mom or the remaining 2 babies.
Mom and 2 babies spent 2 days at vet and mom was on IV antibiotics. Babies had lost some weight but started supplementing. Now, mom and babies are home, with constant monitoring. Mom is nursing the babies and they have put on a little of the lost weight back. My vet started her on oral Baytril. We are waiting for mom to finish 2 weeks of oral antibiotics and we are watching her carefully for her nursing the pups so that we can perform the spay at the most optimal time for her and the puppies.
What thoughts do others have on this topic? What would you do to discuss this with the emergency vet and what should I reasonably expect the vet's office to say and do?
I wish we had emergency vet services in St. Mary's but the reality is that we need GOOD emergency vet services no matter where. I was told to go to Anne Arundel next time.
