I have observed that women applying for many jobs, especially with defense contractors, don't get a fair shake when their resumes go through the initial screening.

I recommend that any female applying for a job not use your full name (just initials and last name) and that you remove any reference to your sex in the correspondence and resume you submit.
Why does that happen, Ken? Do the screeners assume that women aren't suited to work in a quasi-military environment? Since many of the top managers at the contractors used to be in uniform, do the screeners assume that women are offended by the "salty" talk from some of these guys?

Also, the tactic of using only initials was very common for female authors until recent years.

I don't know why, but I do know the difference in the results. I have first hand knowledge on three as I rewrote their resumes and they got interviews and were hired by companies that ignored them when they used their full name. Maybe it has something to do with a preconceived mindset that women aren’t technically capable (which is a bunch of horsesh!t).

These days people only care that you have a degree, not necessarily what you studied. An English degree at least lets an employer know you have some grasp of the English language and can hopefully communicate well. I could be a technical writer, they prefer an English degree...
you were lied to. I was told that lie when I was in college. It's the biggest bunch of crap I was ever fed.

Its not a knock on you, just those fields you listed.
I understand. This is where one of my problems resides. Which road do I meander down? Something I'll have to decide soon enough.

Many companies are now like Christy's (minus trash & vacuum ). Most everyone is capable of using word processing software, fax machines, copiers, multi-line phones, etc. & the administrative worker is going the way of the dodo. :dead:
Not mine. We hire assistants to wipe our ass'...
