Experts say sex abstinence program doesn't work

" WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Programs teaching U.S. schoolchildren to abstain from sex have not cut teen pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases or delayed the age at which sex begins, health groups told Congress on Wednesday.

The Bush administration, however, voiced continuing support for such programs during a hearing before a House of Representatives panel even as many Democrats called for cutting off federal money for so-called abstinence-only instruction.

"Vast sums of federal monies continue to be directed toward these programs. And, in fact, there is evidence to suggest that some of these programs are even harmful and have negative consequences by not providing adequate information for those teens who do become sexually active," Dr. Margaret Blythe of the American Academy of Pediatrics told the committee."

How exactly do you spend millions of dollars trying to get kids not to screw? Free XBox for every boy on his 12th b-day?

Every part of our being has the programming to do one thing....reproduce. Just another well thought out and overly funded study.

Well, that would be because the programs that kids REALLY pay attention to (TV, music, movies, etc) are encouraging them TO have sex.

Duh.

Celebrities are the first ones to say that it's not their job to babysit your kids, which is true except that then they run their mouths telling our kids how to vote, dress, think.... So obviously they do think it's their job to put ideas in our kids' heads.

What would be nice is if the pop media would promote abstinence and responsibility - I'll bet you'd see a dramatic decrease in teen preggos and STDs if it wasn't "cool" anymore.

So what you are saying is some Hip Hop artist singing "Buss a nut up in yo biatch, get it onnnnnnn in da slippery" is more influential than a pamphlet with James Earl Jones picture on it telling kids not to have sex?

This is non sense...

...how do you prove something that didn't happen? How do you quantify how many kids maybe waited a year or two?

Goddamn, 'welfare' has been a catastrophe for two generations now, going on three and it don't work for sh1t. I'll bet you we could get all sorts of people to sing the praises of how bad it would be without it.

Further, abstinence works, obviously and 100%. If schools are so bad that they're not teaching kids to follow directions, maybe that is the larger issue?

Might fix welfare, too beyotch.

Expert: Teaching them about condoms usage isn't increasing safe-sex, or reducing teen pregnancy either.

Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

Not being a smarta$$ in anyway--just curious:

For those of you who believe in abstinence only programs did you personally wait until marriage to have sex?

...waiting to have sex.

It's besides the point; If we, as a people, hold that CHILDREN should maybe oughta wait until they are adults to start having sex and that results in more and more kids waiting, if not until they are adults, at least a year or two more, then the PSA is worth it, yes?

Look for the poll...

Nope. But I didn't receive an abstinence only program - I was a late-70s teen who was told to get on the pill and not rely on condoms.

Also, when I was a teen, having an STD wasn't cool - it was something you should be ashamed of. Now everyone has the clap or some other crotch rot and it's no big deal. We have TV commercial advertising herpes medicine like it's Tylenol.

I just read a story about a house in England that contained members from three generations of one family, none of whom ever held a job :yay:

I think instead of absinence-only, kids should be taught to just use 2+ types of birth control and get it on whenever they want

I would say if everyone was using the pill and condom every time then there would be less teen pregnancies (and STDs) than there are now, with the current teachings

:buttkick: to myself because I told myself I was not going to discuss politics/religion/etc anymore

But we are biologically driven to have sex. Now of course we should be teaching our teens to at least wait until they are mature adults to have sex but not telling them how to protect themself coud be dangerous.
When I was 15 my mom gave me a keychain that said "In case of emergency, open here" and it held a condom. I did not have sex until I was 19 (and that guy ended up being my husband).
Just because you are giving them knowlege does not mean you are saying it is OK to have sex at a young age.
