Explorer or Expedition? Or maybe a 4-Runner?

Key word here...WAGON  that brings to mind what we used to call a "mom blob car"
I need something with more ground clearance for back here. I have to replace the CV boots AGAIN in my car, that's twice since we've lived her in only 2 years. :frown:
Subys have good clearance and long travel suspension. They ain't your moma's station wagon
Race prepped they could do your driveway at 100mph when it's covered in snow.
Google Subaru + world rally cup and see what they do with them.

Have you thought about a Yukon or a Tahoe? I have a Yukon and I absolutely love it. The ride is better than most cars. Gas mileage is not bad considering th size of the vehicle and the towing is great from our little lawn mower trailer to our 24ft car trailer. It also has a bunch of room, we have three kids and five dogs and yes my other half is 6'1 and he actually perfers to take my truck over his chevy full size extended cab. Also with the leather seats if the kids spill something or the dogs jump in with muddy feet, I can just wipe it off...

If you haven't thought about it, test drive one, I'll bet you will fall in love.
I know they are a little pricey but are a much smoother ride compared to Expo, 4-runner and Expedition. JMO

:yeahthat: I LOVE my XTerra, love love love it. It was also rated best in class for 2006. The in-laws have a Pathfinder, and they love that too.

But it is still a soccer mom ride. There is nothing cute about any station wagon, even a Mercedes.
Like your SUV isn't

This will be my every day vehicle, which will most likely NOT be used to haul a trailer (because of the trucks), but WILL be used to tote dogs and tack. I DO want good gas mileage, driving into the city every day like i do.

Sounds like a job for a wagon the handles dirt roads to me.

Since you already have trucks for trailering I'd focus on the gas mileage/comfort/room factor. You're not going to like the mileage of the Exp for a daily drive. There are quite a few small SUVs out there now. Ford has one, the Escape, that looks nice. The F-150/Exp is generally considered the smallest for safe trailering and many will say they'd only go as low as a F-250. The Explorer and 4-Runner are far too short in the wheelbase to be considered safe. At least w/ your F-350s you don't have that to worry over : ) Go w/ mileage, there's no telling what we'll pay for gas in the future.

So... is the 4-Runner not really as comfortable as the Explorer? Rottncop is 6' and a big guy. THAT's why he wants the Expedition, but i will be driving this as an everyday car so i want something better on gas. (The battle rages on in our house )

Can he comfortably drive a 4-Runner? Leg Room and all? Is it lower to the ground than the Explorer? I'm talking about the 06 for both.

...and drive a 2004 4runner every day. V8, 17 mpg avg. All Wheel drive.

I love the thing because it drives kinda like sports car (for an SUV). It's nimble enough for around town (parking, drive trhoughs) and it's comfortable for 5 hours to NYC.

I've towed a ski boat behind it NO problem.

Fords, to me, feel like cheap toys in comparison. Yota feels more solid.

...let's pretend, just for a minute, that you could even catch me. Then what? Yota is a snarling, wall crawling force of nature.

:yeahthat: Or a Murano...whatever that one is.

I WANTS me an SUV.

My daughter has an Exterra and LOVES it, but Rottncop says it's definately too small for him.

I've gotten RC to agree to looking at the Yota's....it's been a tough row to hoe getting him outta that FORD box :wench:

And look at what?

I want an SUV with 4 wheel drive. I like what the New Explorers look like. The 4Runners appear smaller from the outside anyway.

My driveway has a lot of steep hills and during the winter they're a BIATCH to go up and down. Quite scary in fact.

I guess the next question would be, do you want an SUV (Soccer-Mom Utility Vehicle) or a truck.. Not many out there are truly making trucks anymore, they all have cushy rides more in line with a family sedan than a truck, and you can't have it both ways. I have a truck, it rides like a truck, it drives like a truck, but it still has all the amenities. The best mud, snow and off road vehicle "out of the box" then any other, but you have to put up with the ride, because it's built to take a beating off and on road, not for a life of taking kids to ballet and piano lessons..

But I'll add, I'd take mine over any other when it comes time to be in an accident..

Well lets go out in the mud and find out :neener:

 I dont have mine set up for mud though... but I do have a few things done that boosted the HP's up for me, but that is more for hauling and things of that nature :yay:

We can hook up frame to frame and see who does what though

I was amazed at what they are calling 4WD SUV;s now.. take the time to look underneath the vehicle, and notice the pencil thin drive shafts, or the honda civic like suspension..
