The point is that people don't like to be told what to do. Not Southerners, not Greeks, not Yankee's, not Patrick Henry, not you, not me.

At core, the flag is about white supremacy. However, there were more white supremacists in the North in 1860 than in the South. Probably is to this day. That said, that's what THAT flag was about. There was no 'we are all created equal' to it.

THAT said, part of being a rebel has nothing to do with being better than you or you better than me. It has to do with the good old fashioned all American spirit to say "#### you". Part of that flag is defiance to being told what to do.

Reagan used Springsteen's "Born in the USA" like a patriotic anthem because of the refrain. It was actually about the shabby way Vietnam vets were treated.

Before they boo him and say they did what they could do (tried to vote him out of office), you mean?

The GFY comes next: "Now Watergate (you Yankees' problem) does not bother me....does your conscience bother you?" Basically, don't stereotype the South based on our sh*thead of a politician unless you want us to stereotype you back.

I always took it to mean the obvious; In B'ham they love the governor (they voted him in) boo, hoo, boo (cry over it if you like, little babies, none of your business, that's how democracy works jack asses), now we all did what we could do, (throw away line that makes the thing flow and set up the last line of the verse...conscious bother you...)

then;

...where the skies are so blue and the governors true...

...settles the issue. Skynrd wasn't Motown. They were Southern rock for Southern white boys. Rednecks. They were not overtly racist but, in the South, in their era, blacks knew their place. They were not a kum by yah, can't we all get along, hippie, 'n1gger lover' band like CSNY. That's just the way it was and I applaud them for taking the stand they're taking now; that it's time and they do NOT want to offend in any way. Good for them.

When we were in Disney in '03, I recall standing outside the Aerosmith coaster and SHA was playing and a young black kid was singing along. It made me smile, happy of what I took as a symbol that all of that was LONG behind us and it was now (at that time) just a pop song we all know and love, even young black kids, all moving on, and the flag was just a flag from our past. No big deal.

But, make no mistake. Skynrd was a white person's band back then, in the 70's.
