Hello s, it's not a feral cat if she's taking care of it.
I feed my feral and he has an appointment to get vetted tomorrow. I even named him Smokey... but he will never be an indoor cat and I will never think of him as anything but a wild cat that does not belong to me.Hello s, it's not a feral cat if she's taking care of it.
Since your so concerned why don't you take them for her and provide them with all the care you think they should have.
Your post did nothing but hurt. One day you will fall off your high horse. It would be better to try and help.
BTW here is a definition of a feral cat: A cat too poorly socialized to be handled and who cannot be placed into a typical pet home; a subpopulation of free-roaming cats.
The lady I hoped would take some hasn't answered me so I guess she found the cat(s) she wanted some place else or changed her mind.

$256 to put a cat down?
This is exactly why that place sucks. That is ridiculous. I refuse to go there after after numerous bad experiences with them.
PSA: Stay away from the emergency vet on Industrial park drive in Waldorf!
so do you think any other ER would do it for free now a days?
I didn't expect FREE - but I did ask if they had a discount for FERAL CARETAKERS as he was ear tipped and clearly not a domesticated cat and they just said NO.
Had I had the money to lay on the table to treat him ($2,885.00 estimate) - I am quite sure that the cat wouldn't have made it anyway.
His wound was full of maggots and he also had developed an upper respiratory infection and was severely dehydrated. They said blood tests would need to be performed just to see if his white blood count was high enough to tolerate the maggot debridment.
Did they talk about his real chances of survival - no and I really had realisitc expectations - I knew he was bad off and was thinking this was going to end up with him being put down but the $132.00 charge did NOT include the medication nor did it include the initial cost to assess his condition. I was there for about 45 minutes tops. The cat received no meds other then the stuff to put him down, they did not clean the wound, clean the cat or anything. They took an initial look see that took less than 5 minutes. SO I paid $132.00 for a cardboard BOX to take him home in and bury him myself!
Almost 4 years ago I had a 13 yo black lab - Prince - he was my puppy. He had the fatty tumors that are common with this breed. I had them evaluated by the vet many times and checked them regularly as the vet had advised to feel them at least once a month and if they caused pain when being "kneaded" or felt any different to bring him in for further testing. Well, one of his tumors was on his chest and one morning (Labor Day Weekend Sunday) it was oozing black stuff. This tumor grew quickly and was about the size of a softball at that point. His regular vet is closed so I take him to this damn emergency vet. They give me an estimate for $1500 if I remember correctly to remove the tumor. Well, I did not have that kind of money so they stitched it up (my request to hold him until regular vet was open) I think I paid $175 for that - well the stitches didn't even hold for 4 hours.
When he saw the regular vet she took one look at the stuff coming out and said "We can biopsy but I've been a vet for many years and I am pretty sure this is cancer and becuase of where this tumor is located, it's probably spread to lungs, stomach, etc" Well, of course he is 13 - so I had to have him put down - I didn't want him to suffer. AFter further research I find out that you just can't remove a tumor of that size! That additional surgery would have needed to be done and skin grafts not to mention the possiblity of cancer and the treatment costs for that. The emergency vet was just roping me in and the costs would have just continued to rack up!
I knew a girl who had a purebred chocolate lab puppy who had some type of stomach issues - she started wtih a smaller scale esimate and the last time I saw her she had spent $5000 dollars at that place.
RIP OFF!!!!

I understand what u are saying... I do think you would have the same complaint with any ER hospital you would have gone to. All er hospitals are more expensive than reg vets... I even asked my friend at mash what they would have done... And said thay would had handled it the same way. They would not have done any treatments to the animal without consent.. Just in case something happened! That includes cleaning the wound... Unless you are talking after the fact?
Thanks.
Sadly it was the only place I could have gone to that early in the morning. I know but it still seemed a little high for the service - I didn't ask them to do any treatments nor did I expect them to but the fees associated to euthanize were I thought excessive but it is an er place i know. There was no way I could wait around for 4 hours for other places to open with him being as bad off as he was and smelling so bad. It was really bad.
However, my friend who paid the $5000 - she was taking the dog back for follow up and everything on the surgery and kept getting hit with more stuff the dog then needed and complications.
I may be wrong but I don't think this place just takes care of the initial emergency issue and then ushers the animal off to it's regular vet for the follow up - I think they try to hold on to them as long as possible. JMHO - I don't have that much experience with them to say for sure but that is what it feels like to me.

In some 3rd world countries, maggots are used to clean wounds. You are just making excuses for your horrible actions.
ok so you are aware that we DON'T live in a 3rd world country ..... right? so why would we want to use 3rd world practices here? I think you need to stop getting people bent out of shape for your amusement.
