I "met" Jimmy Carter in geesh don't even remember when. I was working for the Sarbanes campaign in Baltimore MD and Carter came through. He was running for president. It was actually an honor to shake hands with him as I guess it would be with anyone running for president. Genuinely a nice man.

I've said this 100's of times, Jimmy as a human being was a great guy but as a president, he was horrible.

Not necessarily. My cousin died in the spring at 89. Her husband was 90. He's doing remarkably well. Don't get me wrong, he's very lonely, but does get out to the golf course and lunch with friends.

Yeah but with Jimmy, I'm gonna take a stab at this and say... 6 weeks. He'll be gone by Christmas or top of January at the latest. I just have that feeling. Maybe you can let me know later I was completely wrong. ;)

Maybe not. My grandfather was 95 when he passed in 2014. My grandmother was 97 when she passed in 2019. They had been married for 74 years, but together for 75 years.

Talk about someone who was in over his head. Which is too bad because he was by far the worst president we've had in modern times until Biden came along and took that crown. Jimmy was a bumbler and I thought Biden was a bumbler too until he took office and I realized he's a ****ing crook and sexual predator.

Jimmy didn't know. Biden doesn't care.

I think the story that really sealed that for me, was when he confronted the Russians with using chemical weapons in Afghanistan. They smirked and denied it. He presented them with physical evidence - don't recall, but it was a piece of material - from Afghanistan - with the chemicals ON it. They looked at him - smirked again, and denied it - giving him a look like sure it's true, whatcha gonna do?

And he said, he was - astonished. Shocked. Did not realize the Russians were like that. Here they were faced with undeniable proof of their crimes - and they looked him in the eye and lied to his face.

He was just simply too naive.

A governor doesn't need to immerse themselves in foreign policy. But on the other hand, the president.........

Jimmy had no backbone, that was his whole problem!

Well he must be astonished by the Democrat Party as well, because they do that on a daily basis. And yet he didn't appear to be. Maybe it was the Alzheimers.

Anyway, this is what happens when you allow Democrats to vote - they make the worst decision available to them. Every. Single. Time.

But the Democrat Party - the people in charge, not the randos on the street - knew Carter wasn't a world leader, and yet they put him up anyway. It's not like there weren't other (better) choices. So there's a reason for that. Candidates don't just decide to run for office and create an organic following - they are carefully vetted and chosen by the Party leaders, then groomed and promoted. They know who the nominee will be long before the primary. It's always been that way for both parties except in the case of Trump - they didn't see that one coming, despite their best efforts to steer and manipulate.

"They" said Ford lost because he pardoned Nixon, but that's bullshit. The American public doesn't have that type of attention span, they probably barely remembered Nixon was president. What really happened is that the media fawned on Jimmah and painted him as folksy everyman, and that is what appealed to the public. And even then it wasn't by a big margin.

They did the same with Biden, but it couldn't hold up to scrutiny in the information age. Good ol' Joe....the lying, pedo, groper, corrupt, crooked, schemer, incompetent....who can't relate to that?

He was highly naive - the story Sam posted is just an example, and the Mariel boatlift is another. You'd think being a Governor and dealing with the shitbags he'd have been more savvy and sophisticated, but he was always astounded that other world leaders weren't a genial nice guy with good intentions like him.

There were a lot of reasons Jimmah won.

For one, he started his campaign WAY earlier than anyone had done before. They all do that now, start a whole year early but it was unusual then.

For another - it’s unusual for a party to have the White House more than eight years lately. There’s typically a change of hands.

There was also the oil embargo and inflation. It was bad enough they concocted the misery index which was used against Carter, by Reagan.

And one more thing. With all that, it was STILL CLOSE. Maybe people did vote against Ford for pardoning Nixon but Ford also was a very uncharismatic leader. And it was still close.
