There were a lot of reasons Jimmah won.
For one, he started his campaign WAY earlier than anyone had done before. They all do that now, start a whole year early but it was unusual then.
For another - it’s unusual for a party to have the White House more than eight years lately. There’s typically a change of hands.
There was also the oil embargo and inflation. It was bad enough they concocted the misery index which was used against Carter, by Reagan.
And one more thing. With all that, it was STILL CLOSE. Maybe people did vote against Ford for pardoning Nixon but Ford also was a very uncharismatic leader. And it was still close.
But the fact remains that Carter won the Democrat primary, and you and I both know it's because the backroom guys decided that's what it should be. Pile on the money, make deals with the media, promote promote promote, and the American public will buy your product.
So why him? Why would a Birch Bayh or Milt Shapp get knocked out in the primary? Why Jimmy and not Jerry Brown?
That's the stuff that interests me - why would the national committee and deal makers promote this guy and not that guy?
