Fleas/Scabs/Weight Loss

Hi Everyone! Im so sorry! I completely forgot to check in with you guys about Gizzy. Roman and Animal - Thank you for the PM's reminding me!!!

So we went to the vets office. She weighed in at 10.5 lbs, which for her (to me) is small. She is normally a very fluffy, very fat 14 - 15lb kitty. She has severe dermatitis due to the fleas, as well as severe anemia. The vet gave her a pill that killed all the fleas on her within 30 minutes and then gave me Vector (sp) as the treatment for home for her and PG. - Just as a side note, that stuff is awesome!!!!!!

She still has the slight heart murmer she has had since she was little. But the vet said the dermatitis and the anemia should clear up when the fleas go away and she can keep some of the blood inside of her. She is also on a sinsitive systems dry food, which I began switching her too a month or so before taking her to the vet.

So all that was good news. Now for the bad news. She has cancer. 2 masses on her ovaries I believe. I could be wrong about where they are. I was kinda in shock when she told me this. Because of the heart mermer, she is not a candidate for surgery as most likely the anethesia will kill her. So, we have made the decision to continue on as we are. She has tons of energy, loves to play with us, and loves to cuddle. We will go back for blood work to see just how bad the masses have effected her, but until she gives me the signs of the cancer winning, we will continue to love her and cuddle her until we have to make the decision to let her go.

Thank you all for your advice and support. We have been treating the house every other day with a flea spray and vacuuming every morning. It, along with the cats being on the vector stuff, seems to be working.

Please keep Gizzy in your prayers for me. I would love to have her until she is old and grey, but I know that will more than likely not happen. I just want to make her happy while she is here. I lost my other baby (Morgan - domestic short hair/scottish fold) to cancer while I was pregnant with my daughter almost 2.5 years ago.

I hope I didnt ramble on for too long. I just get all emotional when I talk about my animals. They really are like my kids.

Thank you all again!

Adopt me please !
a couple of things.
I get my house cats a shot called program injectable. It kills fleas for 6 months. So you can get the shot twice annually.

Diatomaceous Earth has been know to kill fleas, and is harmless to your family and pets.

WOW that's a LONG time - what about ticks? Indoor cats usually don't get ticks, BUT they do come in our dog or on our clothes because I've seen one on my bed before.

Thanks for the update Erin. I am sorry to hear of the Cancer though. Maybe when the Anemia, and the Dermatitis clears up, they can opt for Surgery? I had a Dog that I had to make the decision to put down last October. She too had Cancer, but by the time we found out..it was too late to do anything. She had it all over, and was throwing up blood. She was only 10 years old. Keep up the good work, and PLEASE keep us posted on Gizzy. She is SO lucky to have you!!

Thanks guys! Gizzy isnt a candidate for the surgery because of the heart murmer. So we are just catering to her until she tells us its time.

Sorry about your doggie!

Sorry about your doggie!

just because she has one doesnt count her out! you said it was a slight one so I figure its a 2/5 grade HM....

It may be more your dr is not comfortable with it.... I have been in sx with many HM animals..with grades higher than that.

... so she is not spayed?

She is most def spayed. We are very strict on spay and neutering all of our animals.

The vet said her heart murmer was significant, she had a slight HM when she was little. She didnt give me a number on a scale so I couldnt begin to tell you what the rating is. But the vet said the anesthesia would kill her because of the hm. Im not taking my chances. She is happy, eating and using the potty well. She runs around like a kitten most of the time.

When Dogs, or Cats are Spayed..the Ovaries get taken out too. I wonder if she has bladder Cancer.? Either way..it is sad about Gizzy, but GOOD to hear she is playful, and with a good appetite!!

Thanks Roman. I had a feeling I was wrong about the masses being on her ovaries. My brain was telling me she didnt have them! But apparently I was to dang tired to care at the moment. I want to say they are on her kidneys, but I will have to take a look at the paperwork to be sure. I was in shock when she told me about the masses. I wasnt expecting it and all I could think was "Oh God. I have to put another cat down because of cancer!"

But she is running around the house, eating well and using the potty even better then before. She was curled up in a basket of clothes when I came back to go to bed. Guess she figured the clean clothes was the place to be! I just couldnt make her leave, so I moved the basket, with her in it, to a good spot and there she has stayed!

How cute. Happy that she seems quite happy, and amazingly healthy acting. Give Gizzy a kiss from me, Meat Ball, Molly, and Chloe'!

Update

Gizzy is doing much better! Her hair is growing back, the scabs are disappearing and so are the fleas!

I ordered Capstar and Program Tablets from 800 Petmeds. Once they were due, I capstared them in the am and then in the pm started the Program Tablets. Having a 2 year old daughter who loves to tote the kitties around, I felt like the tablets would be a better flea solver then the oily stuff. And so far so good. Both cats are happier. They are no longer spending 99% of their time scratching or chewing.

We are going to get the carpets in the house professionally cleaned as well. That should help with the fleas in the house as well.

Thank you all for your well wishes and advice!!!
